I am a fairly low maintenance person...I just wanted the bathroom cleaned daily with fresh towels...I could care less about the beds etc...but it was almost the less you needed the less they did... I couldn't decide if the cleaning ladies just didn't understand what I wanted...I would tell them just clean the bathroom and tub..they never left me any coffee..I decided that was my fault ...if you asked the ladies at the desk they handled everything promptly...the restaurant attached to the hotel has decent food but again they were confused by out of the ordinary...some nights I just wanted a salad to go...total confusion...they would tell me they were too busy to make it...guess they make enough money...
I got a lot more on my budget than I ever expected. It's located in the middle of everything, offers rental cars, mopeds, & even kyacks & is on the bus route. The staff created an atmosphere of friendship amoung everyone that provided more detailed information about Maui than any guide book ever will. I ended up moving to a private room for not much more than the dorm room cost & enjoyed trying some New organic tropical fruit that grows right outside my room. It's a humble place, full of helpful hints & great resources for all the activities on the island. I was able to reserve a trip on a snorkel cruise, parasailing, zip line tour, & tickets to a luau. This was the best vacation I've ever had, thanks to the Aloha I found at. Hostel City Maui.
"an older facility that is an economic alternative"
for a budget minded single student or traveling budget minded couple this place is an affordable alternative on a relatively expensive touristy tropical island. Although the facilities are dated, not new that is. a short stay will be pleasant because of the amicable staff, and all the money you will save to explore the island. Near to the only airport OGG is an advantage.
It's a hostel -- if you expect the Hilton, you'll be disappointed. If you have stayed in hostels, then you'll know what to expect.
This one seems clean and well-run. Proprietors were friendly. Lots of staff on hand to take care of things.
The rate was excellent.
Most visitors to Maui will experience Kahului, Maui’s largest city that is home to the island’s main airport and deep-water port. These assets make Kahului a trade hub. Locals flock to its malls and commercial districts for weekly shopping. West of Kahului, the historic town of Wailuku is popular for antiquing. Nearby, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle rock peak is a famous Maui landmark.
