A weekend in Jönköping—the matchstick city on the edge of Lake Vättern
Jönköping is known as the “Matchstick City” because the matchstick manufacturer located here was the global leader in its field in the 1800s. It may seem like a long time ago now, but the legacy of that period still lives on and is characteristic of the city. It also contributes to the beautiful surroundings and the proximity to Lake Vättern can be experienced from a multitude of locations, such as the city pier. Kulturhuset Spira is also located beside the water and is a good representation of Jönköping’s richness and modern culture.
During your trip to Jönköping, you shouldn’t miss what is now called Tändsticksområdet (the Matchstick District) and dive into the modern history of the city and the industry that put it on the map. At Tändsticksmuseet (Matchstick Museum), you will encounter industrialists and factory workers from back in the day. The quarter where the factories once stood is now inhabited by a different kind of life, with galleries, second-hand shops, cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars.
You can get a taste of more culture in the beautiful Kulturhuset Spira at Munksjön. The reflection of the original architecture on the water is an experience in itself. Otherwise, it is primarily the performing arts that can be found here, with everything from music and dance to theatre.
During a weekend in Jonkoping, you shouldn’t miss experiencing the city’s proximity to Lake Vättern by walking out onto the pier! Why not enjoy a good dinner all the way out or perhaps dine on a moored boat? You can also visit the nature reserve Rosenlunds bankar, where you can walk along a high bluff beside the shores of Lake Vättern, and take in a unique experience where the sky meets the water. If you don’t want to leave Jönköping itself, the urban parks also offer many pleasant outdoor experiences.
You can get to Jönköping very easily from most places in Sweden. You can also travel to Jönköping by air as the city has an airport with daily flights to Stockholm and Copenhagen. From Jönköping it is also easy to get to Gränna and Visingsö, where you can visit the Visingsborg castle ruins in Visingsö and the famous candy cane factory at Gränna.
Jönköping is a city that combines modern cultural life with a proud industrial heritage and beautiful scenic views. When are we going?
