We did not know the pool would be closed. We booked the property thinking we could use the pool. In our process to book the hotel though Expedia, we selected the breakfast buffet. When the final booking went through, it did but show up on the confirmation email. We asked at the hotel and they had no record of it either. It could be an error on my part, but I remember clicking the option for the breakfast buffet and there were 2 people confirmed for it, even though we had 3 adults, so that stood out in my memory. Other than that the property was very nice, excellent onsen, and view. I wish I would have known about the fee for an onsen each day.

Nice property, but for many it may be a little too far of a walk away from the tourist attractions of downtown Shimoda and for others not offer enough to be a destination property that you’re happy never to leave. It’s a place to stay if your come in a car or are happy to take taxis (the way I came, on a bicycle, is tough because of a brutally steep climb to reach the hotel, which sits on a cliff) Probably a nice place to stay for a couple of nights if you have kids who would enjoy swimming in the pool (a basic, modest sized-pool) or exploring the rocky beach below the property. Staying longer than than that would get old as the property has only one restaurant. Staff were friendly though the front desk was a bit overwhelmed by the Golden Week rush when I was there. Appreciated that they invited me to park my bicycle at the front entrance and out of the rain. The one restaurant was fine - neither wonderful nor terrible for dinner (a little pricey for what you receive) and had a good breakfast buffet. Room comfortable. Building & grounds in nice shape.

It is one of my favorite hotel to stay.
First of all the location is wonderful. You can see the beach just down your eyes and big blue sky smooths your mind. Every single staff working at the hotel is very nice and friendly which is very important for a guest.

Great Stay
This was our third stay. We really like the Onsen with the outside pool. It is wonderful to relax and look out over the Ocean. The view from the room is great. It is very nice to be able to see the cloud refelctions off of the bay.

A hidden gem!
A gem of Japanese old-style turned new style hotels. The hot spring bath looking out over the rocky coastline is both soothing and serene. With convenient shuttles to the city, it was easy to get around.

Positives: Beautiful location. Friendly staff. Great pool. Clean and well appointed room. Areas for improvement: Food & Beverage; Breakfast mediocre. No poolside services. Couldn’t get late lunch. Enjoyed my stay here as the location, views and pool are great. Rooms simple and very clean. Nice staff. Would like to see more pampering as a resort hotel when it comes to quality of food and beverages offered throughout the day. Breakfast buffet was low quality for the price of $30+ Would rather see higher quality even with less variety. No poolside service, which was disappointing when compared with other places I have stayed. May be some limited services due to long period with few guests due to Corona, but hotel seemed fully occupied when I stayed.

It’s a hotel on hilltop right next to sea. Offers good sea views from Garden. Staff seemed to be quiet cold. Restaurant offered very limited choice for Vegetarians. With kids, this place is pretty boring as they don’t have anything for kids like a playroom / area. Onsen is pretty small. Even though Men’s onsen has got a good view, it’s blocked by pillars of canopy they have constructed.

Everything about this hotel is great. Except the bed. The mattress was horribly uncomfortable. The views from the property are amazing. The hotel decor is nice. The staff treat you like royalty. But if you don't get a good night's sleep it ruins everything.

Great place to stay in Shimoda
With the new renovation, this hotel is becoming better for the newer generation. It's not a super fancy hotel, but enough to enjoy your time in Shimoda. I highly recommend it.

Great new hotel just off the Ginza strip.
Great new hotel just off the Ginza strip. Easy access to transport. Attentive staff, great location, room is on the small side but had full bathtub and every amenity. No issue with late check in, bottled water and cleaned every night. Recommended.

The hotel was quite nice. The views from the room and restaurant were amazing, and the garden is lovely. It's on top of a hill, so it might make things hard if you want to walk around in the area, although the shuttle to/from the station is helpful. Most of the staff were friendly/helpful. I didn't include dinner in my reservations and felt that the person handling restaurant reservations was somewhat brusque when I was asking about whether or not I could go to the restaurant to order a la carte dishes.

A pleasant stay at a beautiful hotel!
We had a really nice stay at the Shimoda Tokyo hotel. The area is absolutely gorgeous and the views from the hotel are exquisite and peaceful. If you are looking for a family-friendly place to stay near but not in the busier, more crowded Shirayama Beach, look no further. Our kids really enjoyed both the pool and the quiet beach in a nearby cove. The restaurant in the hotel is wonderful, and our breakfast that was included with the room was delicious and had a wide variety of offerings! The dinner that we had in the hotel restaurant (buffet-style) was overpriced when you consider that the same amazing breakfast experience is included in the price of the hotel. The kids' buffet at dinner was beautiful with a chocolate fountain and many other dinner options that really appealed to my kids. The only disappointment that we had was that we checked in as a family of 5, into a room with a fold-out love seat, and were provided no linens for the bed. And when we asked if they could come and make the bed up for us, we found that it was going to be an extra charge not only for our extra child to stay in the room but also for the linens and making the bed. Felt that we were a bit "nickel-and-dimed" and for what we paid for the room, this should have been included.

The hotel itself is nicely renovated and clean. No issues with what the hotel had. It could stand to have a bar both in the lounge and at the pool. That is really the only detractor but not enough to take a star. Where this hotel scores big is the beach access it has and the fact that the beach you can get to is perfect for little kids. While the beach is not private, it is tucked away and makes it seem that way. Mornings at the beach, afternoons at the pool and evenings spent on Perry road for dinner via the hotel shuttle make this an all to easy escape. We are looking forward to coming back!

Wonderful stay for 3 nights. The hotel staff are so pleasant and accommodating. Hotel recently refurbished to a high standard. Only down side, the pool was not open which was one of the reasons we booked the hotel. Great spa facility though!! Definitely recommended.

No beach
Old hotel rooms they need updating. The beds were beyond hard and we found it difficult to get a good night sleep. We picked the hotel because it said it was a 2 minute walk from the beach, but the beach they are talking about is not a sand beach. It is a rocky beach with a drain run off going into it. The actual beach and most dining is about a 10 minute drive from the hotel. The dinner buffet is outrageously priced. The breakfast buffet is worth the cost not too expensive it is an expected hotel price. Not like the dinner buffet. Also the hotel staff spoke very limited English.

Great hotel with gorgeous beach view
If you're actually smart enough to call ahead and get picked up from the train station (unlike me) the hotel will actually send a car to grab you for no extra charge. I HIGHLY recommend this as the walk to the hotel can be slightly confusing as well as very exhausting if you happen to be dragging luggage along with you (the climb uphill is nothing to be scoffed at). We arrived to some of the friendliest staff I have ever encountered, enjoyed a beautiful mountain view (although I would recommend booking the ocean view if possible, it is phenomenal but you can also see it from the lobby and restaurant). The beach and parks nearby are wonderful and Shimoda is very pleasant but you will have trouble getting by if you have no language experience. I'd recommend google translate at the least. The hotel staff speak very good english so you shouldn't have any problems there (assuming you speak english of course).The onsen were amazing, try to go late at night especially when its raining for a truly magical experience. The breakfast buffet was western style and very reasonably priced with the coupons the front staff gave us.

If you remember the quality of customer service in Japan 15 years ago this hotel has that standard of great customer service. Bell-people insisted on carrying our bags, provided good advice, tried to use every bit of English they were able and had a good attitude. There was a problem in our reservation, and the manager and staff really worked hard to make the change we needed. The location is close to a beautiful secluded beach without the feeling that the beach is right under the hotel. My children loved the un-fancy, straight forward large pool. We bought one room with the ocean view, and another without the view for our kids. The ocean view room was worth it. It isn't a matter of the same room one with a view, one without. The ocean side rooms are clearly prioritized in terms of cleanliness, upkeep and quality. And the view was wonderful. The onsen wasn't something extravagant, but the facility was clean and useful and close to the pool. Laundry machines were convenient with the beach and pool. It is not close to the city. We walked frequently down the steep hill to eat at the local soba shop, as we did not choose to eat at the restaurant.
