Check In/Out: We arrived about 12.30pm and the room is still not ready - big hotel but fully booked? The concierge is nice to take our bags. Upon check-in, it was quick & smooth. Our luggage bags were transported to the room even before we arrived - so efficient! Check out was fast - just returning the room key & we are free to leave. Location: 5 mins walk from Karasuma Oike Station? There is a bus station on the main street. 7-11 & Family Mart is nearby. Staff: Very friendly, speaks English & they have sufficient staffs to attend to customers. Room / Space: VERY small but for the price we pay for, nothing much to complain. Bed, fridge, TV (we did not use at all), window, power points, toilet with basic amenities, bathrobes. The room is SO small that there is no space to even allocate the TV so it was at the corner of the bedroom. Food: Did not opt for breakfast, nor did they offer anything at all which is totally fine. Can't tell if the breakfast is good or not. Wifi: Free. Note that if you want to make bookings for Michelin restaurants/any other restaurants, the hotel will only help if you are dining on the day you check in, not the day you check out. They refuse to help to check if it has been booked (a Jap friend booked for us & all we needed was the hotel to confirm if there is such reservation). I guess it's their policy. On a positive note - their email response is very fast. Overall: Only book if you need a place to sleep & shower, no more, no less.

"Good Location for Tourists"
The hotel is located right beside several major tourist attractions, ancient temples / shrines, as well as historically preserved streets. It is a perfect location to really immerse in the historical sights of Kyoto. Hotel staff was not too friendly though, compared to other hotels in Japan. However, you only need to speak with them twice, so it was not a big deal.

"Great Experience"
I have never stayed at a Ryokan, but having stayed at Matsui Honkan, I would definitely do it again the next time I am in Japan. The Ryokan is beautiful and conveniently located near downtown Kyoto. I stayed in a Japanese style room equipped with tatami mats and the whole traditional fitting. It really made me feel as if I was staying in a room in an older Japan era. The bath in the basement is beautiful and very relaxing and the staff were very accommodating and friendly. I wanted to try traditional Japanese Kaiseki (which you normally have to book well ahead of time) but to my surprise, not only did they try to find places for me, one of the hotel staff ran out to a local kaiseki restaurant to ask in person and the restaurant managed to accomodate me when they were fully booked. I would highly recommend this place!

"Good location "
We enjoyed our stay here. Location suited us, not too busy but close enough to walk to the action. Appreciated closeness of the station to hotel but we hired bikes not far from hotel & didn't use rail all that much. Rooms were a good size & staff very accomodating!!

"Close to subway station"
The breakfast served was awesome. Traditional Jap variety of food and also western pastries. Room is relatively small but I guess that's quite common in Japan. Room and toilet is very clean. Overall my stay was awesome, no complains at all.

"A lovely oasis in the heart of Kyoto"
We absolutely loved this hotel from the moment we walked in. The staff was so warm and friendly, and the room was beautiful and very comfortable even with our 2 kids. We did not realize the "onsen" (communal spa/bath) was included, and that was a lovely bonus! We visited it every night and it was so beautiful and relaxing. The breakfast buffet is also a must-do experience -- gorgeous Japanese food that we all enjoyed.

"Nice hotel walkable to public transport"
This is a very nice and very affordable property with an Onsen (spa) on-site. Robes and slippers are available in the room for you to get right on with relaxing. There is WiFi throughout the building and there are ample outlets available as well as a pouch of common charging adapters in the room. The deep tub and smart toilet further enable relaxation. There is also an on-site restaurant with buffet style morning nibbles available. Note: It's not a traditional Western breakfast offering but that's half of the fun.
