Ios Town, also known as Chora, is overlooked by picturesque windmills and full of curious alleyways with shops, restaurants and plenty of historical buildings to explore. Though more of a sleepy village by day, by night the town – with its bars and nightclubs – really comes to life.
Like many of the Cyclades Islands, Ios is rich in archeological sites and not far from the town, you’ll find Skarkos with its well-preserved Bronze Age structures. This is one of the most significant archeological sites in the Cyclades.
To the north, another spot worth visiting is the burial place of the epic poet, Homer. And for breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and nearby Cyclades islands visit the Byzantine castle of PaleoKastro in the east of Ios Island.
Mylopotas Beach to the south of Ios Town is the most popular beach on the island and famed for its party scene. There are shops, beach bars and restaurants along the beach, and activities include diving and snorkeling. You can also go kayaking here and explore beaches further afield.
Manganari on the southern coast of Ios Island has some beautiful coves and quiet unspoilt beaches. Featured in the movie The Big Blue, its shallow water makes it a great location for children, but it’s also a good place to try windsurfing. After working up an appetite, find a Greek taverna nearby for fresh seafood.
