The “Courtyard Room” to which we were originally assigned was bleak, unwelcoming and a long, weather dependent trek to the main building. We were due to attend a formal function that evening and, since my long dress and delicate shoes were not suited to a rain-drenched trudge through courtyard puddles, we requested a change of room. We were offered a twin-bedded room at the top of the house which was adequate although the light above the bathroom mirror was broken making the application of make-up very challenging. We were very surprised to find that disposable slippers were not provided...hygienically very unpleasant. The small bedroom TV was an old fashioned terrestrial-channel-only model...really surprising in this hi-tech age! This grade 2 listed hotel has such potential....more modern refinement is needed for it to merit a five star rating.

Tylney hall is a really unique experience.. the hotel is grand and opulent with a very warm welcome from the staff. There is the main mansion (where we stayed) and also a selection of cute and private villas. Upon walking around I wish we stayed in a villa!! But our room in the main mansion was so nice also.. very clean and mostly modern with some quirks. The old wood windows actually open which is a cool feature, and we had a great view of the surrounding landscape. The grounds of the hotel are definitely the shining feature - VERY well maintained through a program of rehabilitation and there is just so much to see.. I would recommend really taking some time and just wandering the paths around. There are also amenities like a pool, massage areas, sauna, tennis courts, the main restaurant/bar, and other nice areas to keep you mostly busy. We only stayed one night but I would have loved to stay a week! Only criticisms I can think of would be on the grounds - it would have been nice to see more signage and placards explaining the various areas in better detail as some of them were just unexplained which loses some of the magic/interest. A better site plan/map would have also been nice - the one they have is decent, but it could use some improvements both functionally and graphically. Overall I LOVED my time here and would definitely come back.. it is really something else!
