Tongeren is a small town which warrants a day, touring the Cathedral, Gallo-Roman museum and beguinage or as a stop-over en route to the Ardennes. This is really a bed and breakfast, located in manor house just a block or two from the Center of Tongeren. The owners have done a lovely job in modernizing yet retaining the traditional charm of the home, with polished wood floors, beautiful tiles and fully modernized bathrooms. There are added charges (which we thought rather high) for parking and continental breakfast and would recommend, instead, a walk to nearby cafes or patisseries.
Right beside the big church in town. Easy walking to shops, museum, cafe's and restaurants. Resto beside the hotel is excellent. Staff are helpful and very kind. Most speak English and know the area. Rooms are very comfortable, European in design, but the beds are great.
It is not a big hotel, so if you are expecting an army of service staff, you will not be happy, but if you want the charm of an old hotel in the heart of the town - this is it!!
Parking is awkward, as the city council has limited parking meters to 1 hour at a time, but a short walk will get you to a longer time lot.
We stayed for six nights and our hosts (Marc and Domenica) couldn't have made us more welcome - greeting us with coffee on arrival, as well as getting up to serve us breakfast when we had exceptionally early starts on a couple of mornings.
The house is 17th century in a lovely quiet village just outside Tongeren. There's plenty of rustic charm, although the facilities are excellent.
Spanning the south of the Belgian province of Limburg, visitors to Haspengouw (also known by the French name Hesbaye) may enjoy numerous bike paths and awesome landscapes dotted with fruit trees and castles. Culture and history fans find in the city of Tongeren, a pretty old town with an antique market every Sunday.
