Pocket Guide: Halong Bay

Halong Bay Hotels

Halong Bay is a beautiful destination, with its spectacular, rainforest-topped limestone islands jutting from the emerald waters. The more than 1600 mini-islands have been on the World Heritage Site list since 1994. Book yourself a boat trip and really make the most of this incredible scenery. Stay on one of the islands or, if you prefer to stick to the mainland, book a stay in the city of Halong instead.

Getting to Halong Bay

Cat Bi International Airport closest airport to Halong Bay, being about 2.5 hours away. If you’d prefer to fly into Hanoi, that’s possible too; though it is easiest to rent a car at the modern Noi Bai Airport, or alternatively take a taxi or a minibus to Halong Bay. When booking your trip, make sure to book a flight + hotel to Halong Bay at the same time to save money.

Djonk or Hotel in Halong Bay

Halong is a very scattered city, spread over the North-Vietnamese coast and it has several ports. If you’d like to explore the islands by cruise, then book in advance with any of the established cruise companies. You can do this over the counter inside the company offices at one of these ports - just don’t let yourself be persuaded on the street. You can also take day trips from Halong or from the capital, Hanoi, where you can book convenient transportation directly to the boat.

There is a large selection of hotels in Halong. Here you’ll find hotels to suit all budgets, whether you want a hotel with spa, indoor pools, tennis courts, restaurants and all the trimming or a simple budget hotels that is still cosy. In Halong there are also a couple of luxurious casino hotels for those who want to try their luck.

Taste Vietnam

Many hotels have their own restaurants serving cuisine from around the world. In the morning, you can usually choose from the continental breakfast, full-English or the Asian varieties. Although many Halong restaurants serve European dishes, be sure to try out traditional Vietnamese delicacies; fresh vegetables and spices like ginger, mint, coriander, chili, lime and lemongrass make the Vietnamese cuisine a true taste experience.
