A weekend in Halland – many things to enjoy in a region full of history
The province of Halland is located in the southeast of Sweden, with most accommodation looking out over the Kattegatt. The harbour town Halmstad is the largest municipality in the region, followed by Varberg, Falkenberg and Kungsbacka. If you're considering a weekend in Halland, here's a sample of things to see and do.
Halmstad is a town marked with culture and history. Art enthusiasts will enjoy Halland's art museum and Halmstad Konsthall (the municipal art gallery). Halmstad castle was built during the 1600s when this region was part of Denmark. Today, theatre performances take place here and it is home to the annual Christmas market. Other interesting older constructions include timber-framed Brooktorpsgård and a number of the buildings in Hallandsgård open-air museum.
Kungsbacka also boasts Tjolöholm castle, built in Tudor style with surrounding gardens. For a taste of everyday life in the 1800s, pay a visit to Äskhult village, where you will find hens, horses and sheep. The old town in Falkenberg also has older buildings such as Falkmanska house with a café and the Hindströmsgård from 1736.
Varberg has many water sports and activities to enjoy. In the summer you can swim in centrally located Kallbadhuset, with its swimming beach for children located nearby, or at a secluded cove along the shoreline, where fishing and surfing opportunities abound. Varberg has many great lakes: Oklången, Mäsen and Skällingesjön all feature swimming docks and are publicly maintained.
Ullared is a highlight of many weekend trips to Halland, where the Gekås Ullared shopping centre is paradise for anyone who loves finding a great deal. Another nearby attraction is the Upzone adventure park, where families or groups of friends can test their climbing skills.
If you're looking to experience the fantastic and varying landscape first hand, you can hike one or more stages of the Halland trail. It's easy to get to any of the starting points of this stretch once you arrive here. Travel to Halland is easy, with domestic into Halmstad City Airport, or you can drive along the E6, take a train or bus as part of a tour of Sweden.
