Pocket Guide: Gulpen

Explore Gulpen

Gulpen is a city in the touristic province Limburg. Don’t let the touristic tag fool you, though! This province is filled with wonderful cities to explore and landscaps that are worth watching or photographing. The same goes for the hills that are quite uncharacteristic for The Netherlands and the great wildlife that comes with its trees. The province in which Gulpen is located is the only place in this country where there is such a hilly landscape.

Nature surrounding Gulpen

As mentioned before, Gulpen is part of the only province in The Netherlands with a landscape filled with hills. The highest point in The Netherlands, located in Vaals, is very close to Gulpen. Same goes for Cauberg and Keutenberg which are in Valkenburg and Schin op Geul. Even though they are not as a high as the Vaalserberg in Vaals, they are still quite challenging to tackle during your walking or cycling routes. A trip to Gulpen means that you’re in a perfect environment to go hiking or mountain biking. Grab some maps at one of the local tourist information offices (VVV) or you can venture out on your own. Whatever you do, make sure to drop by one of the many terraces you’ll find on your journey for some cold drinks and a good meal or some famous Limburgse vlaai (pie).

City life in Gulpen

What Gulpen, and the southern part of Limburg, are known for is the welcoming atmosphere and sociable people. Not only can you visit one of the many pubs and restaurants where they’ll help you but you’ll soon discover that wherever you go people are willing to help you out. In the many pubs, you’ll notice that one type of beer is carrying the same name as the city itself, namely Gulpener Beer. This beer is made in a brewery located in this city. They often host events involving beer tastings and organise various beer workshops and tours that are interesting for beer lovers. However, fashionista’s fear not: you will also not be bored. Gulpen has a selection of great stores, but you can also opt to go to a nearby city that’s even bigger. Maastricht and Heerlen are great examples close to Gulpen but the German city Aachen is just as far as the aforementioned Dutch cities. Why not visit the neighbours for a day?

Hotels in Gulpen

Hotels in Gulpen know what travelers need. Basic amenities such as free WiFi, breakfast options, housekeeping and a newspaper all make life in hotels a bit better. However, those extra and luxurious facilities are the ones that can make your stay one to never forget. Anything from bicycle rental to a sauna, spa or sports facilities on-site is possible in this city!
