Pocket Guide: Guanacaste - North Pacific Coast

Hotels in Guanacaste Province

Guanacaste Province covers Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast, a sparsely populated area of pure white-sand beaches and beautiful clear water, volcanoes and areas of unspoiled forest. There is a wide choice of accommodation options, with hotels in Culebra, Playa Hermosa, Tamarindo, Sámara and other towns along the coast. Use Expedia’s filters to find your perfect hotel in Guanacaste.

Guanacaste’s Best Beaches

The coastline of Guanacaste is famed for its excellent beaches, with Playa Conchal a particularly good beach for swimming, scuba-diving, snorkelling as well as a host of other activities. Boat tours are available, but visitors can also get their feet wet with some surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Nosara Beach especially is a haven for surfers, with reliable wave sets suitable for beginners and experts, and some tidal pools for less confident bathers. For more experienced surfers, Playa Avellana has a lovely reef break, which draws the crowds as do the excellent beach-front bars and eateries under the forest-fringed shade.

Things to Do Inland

Guanacaste has plenty to offer besides its sandy beaches. Venture inland to the Black Stallion Eco Park to try your hand at horseback and zipline riding, before rounding off the day with a hearty barbeque dinner. The Pura Aventura centre offers spectacular ziplining routes down a mountainside – keep an eye out for white-faced and howler monkeys as you ride. The waterfalls and blue lagoon of Rio Celeste are truly magical (wear good walking shoes as it’s quite a challenging hike to get there), and the Llanos de Cortez Waterfall provides a crystal-clear pool dip beneath a spectacular set of cascades.

Guanacaste’s Wonderful Wildlife

No visit to Guanacaste would be complete without spending time with its wonderful flora and fauna. Sibu’s Nosara Wildlife Sanctuary is an animal rescue centre that cares for howler monkeys and other species before reintroducing them into the wild – a truly inspiring place. The Ara Project works similar wonders for Costa Rica’s two native macaws, the Great Green and the Scarlet Macaw – say hello to these wonderful birds and do your bit to safeguard their future. Palo Verde National Park gives boat tours providing views of capuchin and howler monkeys, crocodiles and a colourful assortment of bird species.
