More than 600 years old, Grosnez Castle was one of numerous defences built in Jersey to protect the island from foreign invasions. Today, you can find an extensive range of hotels just a short drive to the castle, from top-of-the-range five-star accommodation to budget-friendly two-star hotels and bed and breakfasts.
Grosnez Castle was built soon after the Hundred Years' War broke out between England and France, when Jersey was regularly at the front line of numerous battles. In English, 'Grosnez' can be translated as 'big nose', and the reason the castle inherited this unusual is due to its Old Norse name of 'grar nes', which was mistaken for the French spelling of 'gros nez'!
Although Grosnez Castle fell into ruins after the 15th Century, it is still a fascinating sight with remarkable panoramic views of the coast and the other Channel Islands of Guernsey, Herm and Sark. If you are visiting during the summer, you can also buy some freshly made Jersey ice cream to re-energise yourself after a lengthy walk along the scenic cliff paths.
The castle is approximately a 30-minute drive from St Helier, which has a great range of hotels and benefits from frequent ferry services to the UK mainland and France.
Grosnez Castle is within easy of St. Ouen's Bay, a superb golden sandy beach that is five miles wide and is ideal for surfing. In the opposite direction is the equally photogenic beach known as La Grève de Lecq, which is generally very sheltered and suitable for families with children. In St Helier, you could also visit Elizabeth Castle, which dates back to the Elizabethan era and also helped to defend the island from French invasions.
Grosnez Castle is just a 25-minute drive from Durrell Wildlife Park, another excellent family attraction which protects various endangered reptiles, birds and other species.
