Beautiful setting, at beach

Posted 31-Jan-2016
Nice location, on or across the street from the beach. Was not excited about the woman who checked us in. She made a fuss about a non issue to the point of making me uncomfortable and she made the assumption since I was traveling with my teenage son that we should eat at the tavern because it was more family friendly rather than offering to make a reservation for the restaurant. My son and I enjoy fine dining, but we ate elsewhere due to the attitude of this staff member. Hotel is really close to pancake rocks.

Nice but not worth the money

Posted 26-Jan-2016
Most expensive hotel of my stay across North south island. Stayed in mostly 4-5 star hotels and this was roughly $50-$100 per night more. To be honest I was expecting more from it. The eco rooms a bare and basic. The views were nice although the picture on my booking suggested It was on the beach but the room was actually given was across the road. When checking out the staff member that served me didn't ask how my stay was and when I asked her if the room I got was the room I booked I was told it was and the manner in which I was told could of beeN a bit nicer or thoughtful. Punakaki is nice but if this is the expense of nice accommodation here I wouldn't reccomend this place.

Beautiful location and rooms

Posted 07-Dec-2015
Pros: Modern room with outstanding views.
Cons: Mattresses were a little saggy
Location: Pancake rocks are amazing - go at different times of day/tides for completely different experiences.
This resort is right on the beach at Punakaiki with great views. The rooms are modern but cozy and surrounded by lush vegetation and gardens. The room and bath was clean and spacious. We did not dine in the restaurant but it looked nice.

You are paying for the views

Posted 26-Oct-2015
Pros: The views
Cons: Just about everything
Location: The location is awesome, this is one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the world. The blow holes and the pancake rocks are magical
This accommodation is not inexpensive - you could stay in much better hotels for far less money. What you are paying for here is the view, which is quite simply spectacular, and cannot be surpassed. The accommodation is very ordinary, tired and in need of serious refurbishment. The WiFi, while supposedly free, is hardly generous, as well as being slow, buggy, and requiring frequent logins. The restaurant is expensive, the food is indifferent, and the staff mostly inattentive and careless. But: You do pay for the views and they are quite simply magnificent.

Small but cosy rooms with minimal cooking faciliti

Posted 17-Oct-2015 on Hotels
From the reviews, we were prepared before the trip that no cooking facilities will be available at Punakaiki Resort. However, upon arrival and speaking to the recep, they informed and offered to change our room to one with induction cooker (the portable kind). The room is situated on the opposite side of the road, which we believe are older blocks compared to those situated on the same side as the recep lobby. I think they offer the newer rooms by default which doesn't have cooking facilities, so make sure you request with the recep if you prefer to cook. The rooms are the smallest compared to the rooms we stayed in our 10 days in NZ. Nevertheless, it is cosy and clean, and about 3 mins drive to the blowholes.

Convenient location only

Posted 11-Oct-2015 on Wotif
Pros: Location and sea view.
Cons: Softer Towels. Water in Fridge. Whitebait on Menu (This is after all where whitebait are readily available in season).
The room rate did not reflect the facilities and standard of rooms on offer. While rooms where clean and comfortable many of the fittings had gone rusty. There wasnt even a bottle opener in the room.

Great View

The hotel is situated on the beach and has a wonderful sweeping view of the ocean. Though a little dated it is quite comfortable with reasonable amenities.

The West Coast is a must during your visit to NZ

We stay at Punikaiki Resort every year to celebrate our wedding anniversary. It's like being on honeymoon again. Great views, peaceful, good service. Have tried other places in other towns, but never as relaxing.
