Nice Listed hotel in superb surroundings.

Posted 09-Aug-2016
Pros: Grounds and surroundings. Good helpful staff.
Cons: Rooms in old building need a makeover.
Location: Good for visiting lcal attractions.
Overall, a pleasant stay in this historic building. A historic building will usually come with a helping of " historic surroundings". You get what you book. If you are in the old building then there are no elevators and the rooms feel somewhat dated. The hotel did provide a fan which helped with the heat issue. The bathroom was small and cosy! The surroundings of the hotel were supberb as were the staff. Food was so so but not outstanding. There is a pub attached which i discovered on day 2 that is not related to the hotel which made a nice change from hotel food. The breakfast was buffet style and not appetising although some good choices.

Once a beautiful historic stately home

Posted 24-Jul-2016
Pros: Its sense of history, with old photos and info about the family who lived there. The very efficient and helpful female receptionist.
Cons: Replacing flush mechanisms in toilets.
Location: Great location with easy access to town and to main roads leading to other attractions
E-mails with booking staff were dealt with promptly and well - all that we had asked for happened. Our room was wonderful, in historic part of the hotel, with great views over green areas. Bathroom recently refurbished and it was wonderful with the exception mentioned below. We loved the idea of having a trouser press, although we did not use it! Breakfast was great, although as others have commented, getting seated in a timely manner was sometimes a problem. Staff need to have the breakfast set out before breakfast time starts so that they can then attend to guests. Selection of food was wonderful and it was beautifully cooked. View from dining room was wonderful. Dinner was also very pleasant. The food was beautifully cooked although we felt more vegetables would provide more balanced meals. Wait staff were very helpful. Flushing the toilet was a challenge. If you have Herculean strength, you may succeed in getting the toilet to flush on your first try. Otherwise, be prepared for multiple attempts and to spend lots of time in the bathroom. The flush mechanism was the problem - the toilet was equally difficult to flush whether the cistern was full or partially full. Unfortunately we were told that maintenance staff had said the water pressure was the problem and so the owners had said that repair would have to wait for a major refurbishment. Replacing flush mechanisms is needed and could be done without any other work being needed.

pleasant hotel

Posted 05-Jun-2016
Pros: The main entrance and the grounds.
Cons: the bar with staff who know what they are doing! offer sunday lunch?
Location: We met friends for lunch nearby because the hotel didn't do sunday lunch. As it happens we recommend The Langton Country pub on London Rd.
hotel is not close to the city centre but the grounds are beautiful. Reception staff was friendly however the bar staff were not very efficient nor welcoming. we had drinks on the terrasse because it was a sunny evening, it is a large area with only a few tables and chairs and it could be made more pleasant. The room was larger than most because we were given the disabled one although we have no wheelchair but this was fine.

The room was very clean and comfortable. They do a pretty good breakfast in quite a nice restaurant, and we also liked the bar/lounge which was very comfortable and quite quiet while we were there, although it was predictably pricey. We didn't have dinner at the hotel, although we did eat at the attached pub (The Clock Tower) which is a cheap and cheerful Wetherspoons-type affair. There isn't really anywhere else to eat within easy walking distance, but it's only a short taxi ride to the centre of Cheltenham. The grounds out the back are nice but more to look at than for walking round as they aren't *that* big. It's nice to be right on the edge of Cheltenham though as it feels like it is close to the countryside. The photos make it look like you're staying in a Georgian mansion, which isn't really true, as only the reception and bar is in there and all the rooms are in a more modern, large, flat-roofed extension to the side. You don't really notice this though and it didn't really bother us - it's perfectly nice inside. Overall, for a long weekend away at the advance price we paid, we were very happy with it and would recommend it.
