The rooms were quite attractive, the Japanese breakfasts were excellent, the food was fresh and tasty and there was plenty of it. Some things I struggled with were, not having a bed to flop down on in the middle of the afternoon after a long walk in the heat. One had to wait until the beds were laid out at around 5 pm. After 4 days of sleeping on a thin futon
on the floor I was hanging out for a western bed. But I am 60 and not as flexible as I used to be. I really struggled with sitting on the floor for breakfast. I became so uncomfortable the second time round that I hardly ate any breakfast. I had to go and find a bakery. I feel a bit uncomfortable here as I do not wish to diss the hotel. The staff were very helpful. though some had rudimentary english. As a genuine Japanese ryokan the place was very good. as accommodation for a soft westerner it left quite a bit to be desired.

We decided to experience a traditional Japanese hotel or Ryokan. The Sakanoue was a terrific place to spend one or two nights. The staff is so nice but no one speaks English. The room rate includes a massive and delicious breakfast and a Japanese style dinner. If you like Japanese food, it would be wonderful for you.

Wow - this place is incredible and gives you a true traditional Japanese experience. Right up front, I will say that yes, this place is expensive. Having said that, we are extremely happy with our stay and would highly recommend this place to others. You really do get a wonderful experience here. The staff's English is limited, but still very friendly and welcoming. We opted to get a dinner and breakfast package and it was great! After a few busy and tiring days in Tokyo, it was pleasant to just relax at Gion Hatanaka and have delicious food brought to us (the food was so intricate, unique, and varied...a small portion of it did not suit my taste buds, but I appreciated the effort as you can tell it was high quality and a lot of thought was put into preparing it). The attendant (?) who took care of us and brought our food/made our beds was so kind and friendly. The room was spacious, also a nice change of pace from Tokyo. We loved our stay here!

The hotel provided exceptional service during our stay. The staff helped us book an appointment for kimono rental, as we didn't have access to a local phone during the day. All staff were fluent in English, which made it easier to communicate.

This ryokan, in the heart of Giin, was an excellent one. The staff were all pleasant and polite, especially if you can speak some Japanese. The rooms were in excellent condition an, and while I personally wasn't able to eat their breakfast or dinner while I was there, they looked delicious. The internet they offered was respectable: not fast but not slow either. Finally, the sento they had on the first floor was excellent.
As for the traditional aesthetics, I think this ryokan did very well. All the staff were wearing very nice spring kimono, which were appropriate for the season. The rooms each had three ikebana: one under the shoe box at the entrance, one in the tokonoma, and one on a side table. Of course, they had a yukata for each guest available as well as towels for the sent. It was all very nice.
As far as complaints go, the only one I have is that the futons were a little short for me. Of course I'm a big American guy so I find it hard to fault them for that.

"Excellent Location in historic district. That's a"
After reading some of the other reviews, I thought that maybe some of the reviewers were being whiny. That was not the case. They were all right on the money i.e. the heat only climate control, the what the heck am I supposed to do with this tiny pillow, the crazy soft jell-o bed, and the way out of this world price.
The location for Kyoto is totally great, food, shopping, temples, shrines, bus stop right in front, and seeing geishas walking down the street, made up for it all.
Pack as light as you can, there is simply no room for a large suitcase, but that's ok because there is so much to do in Kyoto, all you need is a bed and shower.
