The rooms were quite attractive, the Japanese breakfasts were excellent, the food was fresh and tasty and there was plenty of it. Some things I struggled with were, not having a bed to flop down on in the middle of the afternoon after a long walk in the heat. One had to wait until the beds were laid out at around 5 pm. After 4 days of sleeping on a thin futon
on the floor I was hanging out for a western bed. But I am 60 and not as flexible as I used to be. I really struggled with sitting on the floor for breakfast. I became so uncomfortable the second time round that I hardly ate any breakfast. I had to go and find a bakery. I feel a bit uncomfortable here as I do not wish to diss the hotel. The staff were very helpful. though some had rudimentary english. As a genuine Japanese ryokan the place was very good. as accommodation for a soft westerner it left quite a bit to be desired.

This is a traditional Japanese ryokan that offers traditional experience with comfort. The room is spacious and they serve the beautiful delicious meals in the room. The staff is super friendly. It's right next to a shrine and there are many shops nearby. I would totally stay there again!

The staff was wonderful--proactive. For example, although we had umbrellas on a very rainy day, a staff-member followed us outside and had us use the hotel's larger umbrellas. The free water bottles, wonderful snack crackers and instant hot water for the delicious coffee and tea made us feel at home and very cared for. The hotel was spotless!! This is not a luxury hotel, but it still felt great with all the amenities and care given us. Everything was meticulously done..

This ryokan, in the heart of Giin, was an excellent one. The staff were all pleasant and polite, especially if you can speak some Japanese. The rooms were in excellent condition an, and while I personally wasn't able to eat their breakfast or dinner while I was there, they looked delicious. The internet they offered was respectable: not fast but not slow either. Finally, the sento they had on the first floor was excellent.
As for the traditional aesthetics, I think this ryokan did very well. All the staff were wearing very nice spring kimono, which were appropriate for the season. The rooms each had three ikebana: one under the shoe box at the entrance, one in the tokonoma, and one on a side table. Of course, they had a yukata for each guest available as well as towels for the sent. It was all very nice.
As far as complaints go, the only one I have is that the futons were a little short for me. Of course I'm a big American guy so I find it hard to fault them for that.
