Pocket Guide: Design Hotels in Genoa

Stay in a Design Hotel in Genoa

Book a room at a design hotel in Genoa if you want a place to stay that stands out from the crowd. Promising you a stylish stay, design-led accommodation is creatively decorated with contemporary styles that can range from the glamorous to the totally zany.

Guest rooms are often individually decorated and service is superb. For an unforgettable time in Genoa, stay in a cool design hotel.

    Visit Genoa's Art Galleries

Grand 16th-century boulevard Via Garibaldi is home to three of Genoa’s most famous art galleries that are housed within opulent palaces. The Musei di Strada Nuova incorporates a trio of neighbouring palaces: Palazzo Tursi, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso.

To see works by old masters, from Van Dyck and Veronese to Durer, Guido Reni and Grechetto, head to Palazzo Rosso. Palazzo Bianco is crammed with works by Flemish, Spanish and Italian artists, including Caravaggio and Rubens, while Palazzo Tursi houses a small collection of renowned violinist Niccolò Paganini’s personal artefacts, including letters, his chess set and musical scores.

Also worth a look is the Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art, which is full of Japanese and Chinese art. The gallery is set in the 19th-century gardens of Villetta Di Negro, where you'll find two plane trees and three sequoias dating back to 1870.

    Explore Genoa's Architecture

Head to the Old Port to see the designs of star-architect Renzo Piano, who revamped the decaying area in 1992 for the 500th anniversary celebrations of Genoese navigator Christopher Columbus' discovery of the New World. Genoa-born architect Piano, who designed The Shard in London, breathed new life into the Old Port by transforming cavernous warehouses into museums, shops, restaurants and attractions.

One of Porto Antico's must-see attractions is the Aquarium of Genoa. Set on a quay jutting out into the water, the aquarium's dramatic ship-inspired design fits beautifully into its surroundings.

Another brainchild of Piano is the Bigo Lift, a panoramic elevator that offers 360-degree views from a high above the ground. The elevator was originally a crane mounted on cargo ships but is now the focal design feature in Genoa’s harbourside.
