Geneva Museum of Natural History

Fossils, meteorites, mammals, precious stones and the earliest human ancestors inspire and delight science enthusiasts inside this free museum.

With exhibitions covering human evolution, the Solar System and Swiss flora and fauna, the Geneva Museum of Natural History has something for all lovers of science and ecology. The popular attraction is also known for its wildlife dioramas featuring life-size models of foxes, bears, alligators and many other animals.

The museum was founded in 1820, and is now one of the largest natural history museums in Switzerland. The exhibits are labeled in French, but you can pick up an English language pamphlet at reception for additional explanations.

Begin on the first floor, which is dedicated to Switzerland’s regional fauna. See dozens of stuffed mammals, amphibians and birds. Watch the two-headed turtle eating lettuce leaves. The unusual animal was born at the museum in 1997.

Continue to the second and third floors, where you will find displays of non-indigenous animals. This collection includes a number of stuffed exotic specimens, including polar bears and African rhinoceroses. Endangered and extinct species, such as the great auk and the dodo are also presented. Some of the animals are exhibited in large dioramas that are representations of their natural environments.

Go to the museum’s upper floors to explore the history of humankind and view fossils and exhibits that explain the evolution of humans. Compare your size to the sculpture of the world’s best-known early human ancestor. The bronze figure is based on the skeleton of Lucy, the name given to remains that date back more than 3 million years. Visit the earth sciences exhibit to see the large collection of minerals, including some that are indigenous to Switzerland.

The Geneva Museum of Natural History can be reached by bus or tram, or by a short walk from the SNCF Eaux Vives train station. It is a regular trip for school children in Geneva, so if you want to visit during a less crowded time, plan to come outside school hours. The museum is open every day except Mondays and admission is free.
