The county of North Yorkshire is probably best known for its wealth of spectacular natural beauty. From the Moors to the Dales, the county is dominated by wild and beautiful National Parks. Visiting North Yorkshire isn't all about the great outdoors, though. The historic City of York also boasts a treasure trove of cultural attractions. One of the city's highlights is the Friargate Theatre, a cultural hub right in the heart of York. Thanks to its central location, there are plenty of exquisite hotels nearby.
A Valuable Creative Space
Friargate Theatre is an intimate studio theatre right in the heart of town. The excellent location is just metres from the river and around the corner from the famous Clifford's Tower.
The theatre opened its doors to the public in May of 2000 with a well-reviewed version of The Alchemist. Since then, it's served as a lively centre for the arts in this already cultured city. In addition to the main 100 seat studio theatre, the building boasts space for workshops, as well as a rehearsal space, which can also serve as a secondary theatre.
As well as traditional plays, the theatre puts on literary events, music and comedy nights. It's also the home of an exciting youth theatre group.
Hotels near Friargate Theatre
By far the country's most popular place to visit, York is home to many of the finest hotels in North Yorkshire. Visitors who favour self-catering can check in to the Reubens Court and City Apartments, which feature their own kitchen, as well as free WiFi. If a traditional hotel is more your scene, the Best Western Plus Dean Court Hotel is a solid bet. The four-star hotel is centrally located and even features some impressive business facilities.
York is packed with things to see and do, which goes some way to explaining its status as the second most-visited city in England. The Friargate Theatre is close to many of the city's premier attractions. If you're in town for a play, it's well worth taking the time to explore a few more of the city's gems. Clifford's Tower is a must-see, as is the York Castle Museum.
