So disappointing!
For a 4 star hotel this was appalling. During our 3 night stay we didn’t see one member of hotel staff. No reception (self checkin & out) room was dirty I had to clean the toilet when we arrived and the cups but there was no one to tell. Rang reception several times no one picks up. Went down whole area in darkness. You would have thought the hotel was closed. Dinning room closed breakfast in attached bistro, thank goodness this was lovely.

Superb location - views and easy to find. Excellent shower and balcony. Room quiet and dark, and decor, facilities and size good. Bed could benefit from new mattress. Self check in not great - impersonal and awkward to use, but suppose helps to save money during hard times for hospitality sector. Bar n restaurant staff pleasant, prompt and helpful. Food OK for price. Overall value for money OK. Would stay in refurbed balcony room again.

We arrived @ Fort William on the Blue Pullman train & caught a taxi to this hotel, book in is electronic and we reserved breakfast for two days, 2 early morning calls and enjoyed a nice meal on the Sunday. We even found time to walk up Neptunes Staircase to the top and down the other side the scenery is fantastic. Ben Nevis was looking majestic.

Traditional Scottish hospitality, beautiful area.
Amazing location by Caledonian Canal. Great view of Ben Nevis. Excellent room. Very friendly staff, but perhaps newer members of staff could have done with a bit more restaurant training. Would return again to use as base for a magnificent area.

Disappointing stay
We booked to stay at the Moorings Hotel last year. When we arrived they did not have us on their system & had no room for us to stay. We had to find alternative accommodation in the town which was not particularly good. So very disappointing- not sure how the Moorings lost our booking?

Short family staycation near Ben Nevis
This hotel has two distinct areas, the original and a new section. We stayed in the original so can only review that area. Was a lot of stairs (both up and down) to get to our room (no lift) and with heavy bags was awkward (no porter to help). This part of the hotel needs to be refurbed, although clean, the carpets are a bit shabby. The hotel has a 4 star review which in my opinion is outdated (may apply to the new section). There is an automated check-in system that didn't work and just caused queues. There was also no one at reception during our 2 days stay at all, including when i tried to check out. In our room the windows were screwed shut so unable to open meaning the room was stuffy and hot, there was a plug-in- fan in the wardrobe but it only recirculated the stuffy air. The views from our room (old section) were pretty amazing of the Caledonian canal locks and of Ben Nevis. We didn't try breakfast as thought £15 /head was a bit expensive. Best thing about the Moorings Hotel for us was it allowed dogs to stay (for an extra charge of course) and the views. This was a staycation for 2021 and we were somewhat surprised with the cost of everything (appreciate the area is remote, but.....)

The location was excellent overlooking Neptune’s Steps and with beautiful weather we were able to sit on the deck with a view of Ben Nevis. We were disappointed with the contactless check-in, it was a faceless experience which then spread throughout our stay. Although the staff we encountered were on the whole very friendly and helpful there was a distinct lack of leadership and an obvious shortage of staff. We understand that because of the pandemic there have to be changes to the usual practices but that doesn’t really explain why we had to ask for extra toilet rolls (one for a four day stay was never going to be enough). We also had to ask for clean towels and empty our own bin because the rooms weren’t made up daily - which we would expect for a so-called 4 star hotel. Again, the pandemic may be an excuse but surely cleanliness can be maintained with careful planning. When we asked staff why our towels hadn’t been changed they said that we should have been made aware at check-in that rooms weren’t going to be made up but of course it was contactless so we weren’t told. When we complained to a member of staff about how ridiculous it was that we had to ask for toilet roll she was very apologetic. She explained that the hotel had changed hands a couple of years ago and the property was now run by a management company - which may explain why it felt lacking in atmosphere and warmth.

We stayed at this hotel twice on our trip round Scotland. The 2nd time was better than the 1st, mainly because the room better dodgy water pressure 1st time round. Staff were pretty good, food was fine. Bit pricey and I'm not really sure how it can be a 4 star hotel. Suited our needs you get a good view of Ben Nevis on a clear day.

Perfect location but a bit tired and understaffed
Average stay but Hotel a bit dated. Room large, clean and had good ‘ in room ‘ beverages etc. No-one working in reception when we arrived so had a wait a bit for checkin. No-one working reception when we left, it was a key drop, therefore no-one enquired about our stay or time at the hotel. Bar area was short staffed, so because they had 2 tables of dirty tumblers to deal with, they decided to call last orders at 10.15 . Maid came into room at 9am whilst we were dressing even though check out wasn’t for a while after. Location great… Right beside Neptune’s Staircase and the Balvadie railway station so convenient for sight seeing and travelling.

We have recently changed our reception area due to now having a kiosk within our bistro area for our guests to use for check in and check out - there is also a sign at reception for guests informing of this Our bar closes at 11pm in the evening and we certainly have not closed the bar early due to being short staffed on any occasion. Even with the tables full of glasses to clean after a busy dinner our team would still be present to serve our guests and not leave until 11pm or after the area is all clean and tidy I am sorry that our housekeeping team came into your room earlier than they should have and I will certainly give this feedback to our team Kind Regards Cathy

Excellent location, very good staff specialty young lady Prachi. Plenty of parking. Very good Bistro. Good room size and baths. Quick response to any requests. To go to some rooms, you may have to pass through staircases and a series of corridors that are not situated at same level. That to us was a minor issue.

4 star rating very misleading. Rooms old fashioned. Breakfast not the best but evening meal ok in canteen style restaurant which was a let down. Personally would not recommend as the whispering pines far better.

Brilliant
Fantastic stay. Even wiyh restrictions etc, I had an excellent stay at The Moorings. Staff were very friendly and helpful, room was clean and comfortable. Dinner was delicious and breakfast was fine considering there isn't cooked food due to Covid.

Fantastic room with a balcony looking out on Ben Nevis and the flight of locks. Food was good, customer service was great and room service was unbelievably rapid. We were in the new part of the hotel, the older parts looked like they could do with a bit of investment.

We had a really good stay at the hotel the staff were all very friendly and helpful the room was clean and the bed was comfortable.The whole hotel was clean and well maintained,food was good and there was a good choice.The hotel itself is in a good location and the ground around it is well maintained.We had our dog with us and the staff were very accommodating with her and to be able to leave her in the room while we ate downstairs was a big plus and after eating we could bring her down to the bar area.The breakfast was excellent with a good choice.Would stay here again and would recommend it to people.

COVID was taken very seriously- cleaning/temperature checks were excellent. Location is very good with easy and free parking. Lovely gardens. Hotel is a bit dated and rooms can be a bit noisy if you are above the bar/bistro Bistro gets very busy at night - need to book. Food was good and portions plentiful.

Moorings hotel - Overall, a bit of a let down.
Disappointed with overall condition of hotel. I stayed in a 3 star hotel the previous night which was much nicer than this 4 star hotel. In the room, the double bed was actually 2 single beds pushed together and there was a sofa in the room which was extremely uncomfortable, not worth the amount I paid for the room in my opinion. However, we had dinner in the hotel which was very tasty, definitely the nicest meal we had during our trip.

Happy Highlander
Quiet and comfortable with good parking and an excellent menu in the restaurant. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful ( extra thanks asI left my mobile in my room and the hotel got it back to me quickly ). Easy access to Fort William. Would recommend for anyone looking to stay in the area.

The room was very clean, the bathroom exceptionally well stocked with toiletries, the bed comfortable and there were biscuits to enjoy as well! The location overlooking Ben Nevis and Neptunes staircase was delightful. The hotel is a little outside of Fort William if you have no independent transport.

Excellent place to stay. Breakfast was lovely, service excellent. Room clean and well equipped with amenities. The only downside was the mattress which had springs popping up.

A lovely hotel, location, staff, condition, breakfast, but the evening menu and food was as uninspiring as it can get.

Nice location
We had a nice time at the hotel. It was located near the biking/walking trail, which was convenient. Out the back of the hotel was Neptune's Ladder, which was interesting. We saw a couple of boats making their way through the lock system during our stay. Our rooms had lovely balconies to sit out on. We also enjoyed sitting out on the cafe's deck for happy hour. The bed was comfortable and the shower was nice. Our room was a little stuffy, so we propped the door to the deck open to sleep better at night.
