Quiet Country Escape

Posted 23-Jul-2017
We had a lovely stay here. It's a bit hard to find, but close to a quaint small village (Whimple) with 2 good pubs. Our only issue was with the shower, which had very low pressure and didn't drain well. Otherwise it's a great base to make day driving trips in and around Devon.

Second time around

Posted 10-Jul-2017
Pros: The position, the staff and the breakfast is good with a good selection.
Cons: I did feel as if I was falling out of bed. I think it is because I have a Tempur bed at home and I am use to that.
Location: The location is fine there is a road next to it but this is only local traffic and a few pedestrians. There are 2pubs in the village that do good food
This is a fine country house. The overall appearance is good and the welcome is friendly. They are very accommodating to guests as we wanted our breakfast a little earlier, it was no problem. The rooms are comfortable with all the facilities you would want for a weekend stay.

Quiet, comfortable B&B in lovely house

Posted 04-Jul-2017
We stayed only one night but Woodhayes could definitely be a wonderful base for a holiday. It's a lovely old house, very welcoming, very clean and well maintained. Our room was spacious with a huge bathroom, a very comfortable bed and excellent breakfast (including perfect scrambled eggs!). There are large gardens, two pubs in the little village and easy access to the A30 so would thoroughly recommend it on the basis of our stay. Can also recommend going for a drink and 'Piggy bits' at The Pig near Honiton or even a meal - it's only 15 mins from Woodhayes.

Gorgeous Georgian pile business-hotel & no flair

Posted 07-Nov-2016
Pros: The bed, the Breakfast could not be better.
Cons: Make it what it claims ot be, a country house. Remove all that chipboard furniture and anything that matches anythng else.
Location: Came down for the Tar Barrels in nearby Ottery St Mary. An event all should do at least once in your life. Like no other Bonfire night.
I can see why the majority will love this place. Enjoyed my stay. However with its potential to be a true country house, shouting at you, this has been lost. All the furniture matches, with everything spotless, even the three table-lamps in our room were each identical. It looked as if the whole room had furniture sourced at the same department store, and on the same day. Like walking into an 'executive home' or a 'exclusive' business-grade hotel. Perfect and at all times matching and heaven-forbid, it had to be symetrical. I can concede, golf-club man will love this place. I can see the Range Rooney or the Audi pulling-up in the parking area now. Me? it left me cold, but I fear I'm not the typical guest. A house like this should have the touch of its origin, yet that takes not money, but flare. It could have been done for less than has been spent. And I can see why 'department-store' appointments are there. They are quick, and it works. The majority aspire to this anyway. It's for 'corporate-man'. If you or your partner have been on one of those seminars for 'winners' (and you have such thing as a CV) you're going to love it. It 'was' a country house. That feel has been lost. Which is a shame.

Warm welcome at Woodhayes

Posted 12-Sep-2016 on Hotels
We stayed overnight on way to holiday in Cornwall. The owner was very welcoming, helpful and informative. He directed us to 2 pubs for evening meals, which we sampled one which was very reasonable and excellent food. The room was very luxurious and very comfortable beds with added nice touches. Breakfast could be ordered night before and there was a very good choice of breakfast items, beautifully cooked & presented and varied choice of cereals, pastries available as well in dining room . Staff very pleasant and accommodating. We would stay again definitely. A lovely start to our holiday.

Not a boutique hotel

Posted 12-Sep-2016
Pros: The grounds.
Cons: Pretty much everything. Needs updating if it's serious about boutique claim.
Location: 15 mins from Exeter.
Lovely period house in a beautiful setting. Fabulous gardens. However, far from boutique, it is seemingly furnished from Oak Furniture Land/Next. Rancid smell from hand cream - had to wash it off (can hand cream be out of date?). Mould on Windows. Cobwebs on light fittings. Mould on skirting boards in dining room. Dirty cups and filthy bowl at breakfast. Defrosted frozen fruit - no! Danish pastry seemed to have been cooked on a hot plate - brown on the bottom, uncooked on the top. Woodhayes is a house and it is in the country - that's about it.
