This is an amazing place. We had trouble getting to our room as no one at reception. Then the key didn’t work. It’s like staying in a different century but with very very good beds

A unique experience! Our walk to our room was like being transported into the time when the convent was inhabited. You really got the authenticity of the place 500 years ago. So cool and the room was clean and comfortable. Would recommend highly. The town of Vila Vicosa is also a must see.

MY 82 BIRTHDAY
RECEPTION was good.She is a fine lady. But after checking she said follow me I will show you the direction.She was long way from us.No help with our luggage.That beautiful marble stair with 10 steps near the reception was a bit difficult for us. One hand holding a small suitcase and the other hand holding the beautiful marble banister was not eassy. Don´t forget I am 82 years and my wife is 78 years old. The room was good but with a tiny window.Very good bed and linens,.I always have a double bed but they gave me two single beds.I was very unhappy. Called Hotels.com and they did not helped. Very disappointed. This is my 2nd time there.They have made some improvement but not enough.Lot of cost saving going on. There is no face cloth or small towel. no slipper.The floor is made of tiles and marble and it is cold. Similarly no bath robe.Mini bar ie empty.Why ? they donot trust the guest?This is not nice. The bk.fast was good but not fantastic.I generally eat egg,becon ,and bk,beans.But here it was looking disgusting.Never went there again. just took bread ,butteer ,cheese and fruits. Resturent was very good . good dinner. and good wine.Even they made a small cake with one candle for my 82 Birthday. Very nice surprise.Tha staff were very polite and kind.

Wonderfully Historic Yet Every Amenity for 2021!
This is a wonderfully historic hotel with a large swimming pool, amazing gardens, a top quality restaurant, a divine breakfast and mysterious chapels off the restaurant's court yard with centuries old murals. It is next door to the Summer Palace of the Dukes of Braganza - take the tour and understand the history of the pristine little town in the Alentejo.

Amazing building.
Just an amazing historic building. Atmospheric and delightful. Lovely seating areas with the possibility of a real wood burning hearth. We loved every minute of it and were genuinely sad to leave.

A truly unique experience
A former royal and aristocratic convent adjacent to the Ducal palace which was the home of many Portuguese kings, the Pousada Convento de Vila Vicosa is a destination in itself. Its wide variety of unique rooms that have been carefully renovated and adapted for hotel use stand out among the many dozens of castles, chateaux, monasteries and convents in which my wife and I have stayed over the past four decades. Although due to the complexity of its layout, it is easy to get lost and some of its rooms are multi leveled and might be unsuitable for some, we have always found the staff extremely helpful and willing to do their best to tailor guests’ rooms to their needs and interests to provide a truly memorable experience.

Great location, nice staff but in need of an update at least in the room where we stayed. Badly designed bathroom, floor needs attention and after a cut in the water supply for a few hours the over head shower did not work properly.

Problems and pluses of a Pousada
When arriving, the reception was staffed by a harried employee who had to welcome guests, answer the phone, and bring guests to their room. The pousada has large grounds and finding all the facilities is challenging. That said, it is a historic building with fascinating features. The breakfast is a large spread with a variety if coldcuts, drinks, breads, and scrambled eggs. The pool area is pleasant but the water is not heated and the wading pool visited by wasps. The room did not have a charging plug next to the bed for the cell phone and the wooden floors creaked but the ample space and balcony of the Superior Room was nice for spreading out to relax after a day of exploring the surrounding areas. In other words, there were both advantages and disadvantages of staying here.

History in the Portuguese Interior
What a building! 500 years old former convent only vacated in 1905 - Vaulted ceilings, Quadrant, beautiful gardens and antiquities to be seen close by. Above all, peaceful and relaxing setting with knowledgeable staff to assist. Does not sound it, but great for families too with a pool outside and a games room to keep the little ones entertained. This was a real find, and we will return to explore the area again in years to come. You need to visit to appreciate it fully; the website pictures do not do it justice. Enjoy

Great place to relax
Stayed two nights with 8 and 12 year old children. The hotel was a nice place to relax by the pool and enjoy some quiet time after a busy period of touring in the big cities of Spain. The pool was lovely, with a cabana service snacks and drinks. The gardens around the pool were lovely and full of fruit trees. The room was nice, comfortable, and clean. Overall a very nice stay at the hotel. The restaurant in the hotel served a good meal, but it was expensive (and I thought overpriced). We enjoyed the town of Vila Vicosa - the kids could climb the castle walls and the town is pleasant to stroll around in the evening.

The best of Portuguese charm and quality.
This place is idyllic. Not only is the hotel historic and physically beautiful, the service was just out of this world. The concierge service I received was the best of all time for me, and the included breakfast was sensational. I really felt like I was a guest staying in a palace due to the atmosphere of the location, the top-notch service, and the high-quality of the room and the food. As this hotel is right next door to the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, it can't help but feel stately and luxurious but the staff really make the place and they keep their promise that "YOU" are their priority, as their advertisements say. The town of Vila Vicosa itself was also lovely, and I had one of the best taste and value-for-price-meals ever at a restaurant in town (Cuco's) that was recommended to me by the hotel staff. It felt like I was in a dream staying here. Definitely visit the palace if you stay at this hotel or in this town. Highly recommended!

Beautiful historic hotel, not 5 star service
Fabulous historical setting, with many features of the convent intact. ( A guide to the building would have been useful). Beautiful cloister, magical place to eat dinner. Sadly not matched by the quality of the food, which was expensive and unexciting. (Try the restaurant in the middle of the town square). Breakfast good and eaten in lovely little courtyard off breakfast room. Beautiful frescoed bedroom would have been perfect except that the air conditioning (which wasn't, it was a heater blowing cold) could not cope with the high 30s temperature and so sleeping was difficult. Thankfully the pool was perfect and well maintained. Staff mostly helpful but often difficult to find anyone to serve / help you - service is not what you'd expect from a hotel that describes itself as 5 star.

Great staff in a mediocre facility.
We booked the hotel here thinking, mistakenly, that it was in the vicinity of the city of Evora. It was not. It's about 63 kilometers away. I'm not sure why this hotel came up in our search for hotels in the vicinity of Evora. The mistake was certainly ours. The town of Vila Vicosa, a sleepy small historic town, did not have much to offer in comparison with the many great cities and towns in Portugal (we had visited Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Lagos, Cascais, to name a few). Vila Vicosa was exceptionally hot and with a bug-to-human ratio that had us dauntingly outnumbered. We spent only one night there and tried to enjoy the authentic feel of a town not visited by many tourists. As far as the hotel specifically, we booked it for 3 people and they brought us an extra cot for our daughter to sleep on. The next morning our daughter reported that, though she had never been to prison, she imagined that the bedding would be somewhat similar in comfort and feel.

Nice Hotel
We stayed at the hotel for one night. The facilities are very nice, and the room is beautiful. The hotel staff was extremely accommodating, friendly and helpful. However, the walls in the rooms are very thin and we could hear a lot of noise from other rooms. There is not a lot to do in Vila Vicosa. It is about 45 minutes from Evora so not an ideal location.

Very good locations and wonderful building and rooms - very historic and wonderfully converted to modern standards - breakfast is nice in an old dinning room filled with sun and wonderful courtyards. Well worth the visit and the stay.

a tranquil break from a fast paced road trip
Although difficult to find as the name has changed to Pousada Joao IV, this hotel was a slice of heaven. Beautifully appointed, maintaining its historical roots in décor, this hotel was luxurious and the staff excellent. I only wish I could have stayed longer than one night.

Beautiful hotel but somewhat devoid of atmosphere.
A beautiful hotel with fabulous rooms and courtyards and great facilities. The only minor issue was that the food in the restaurant at dinner was not great and the drinks were a bit over-priced compared with bars and restaurants in the town. As a result the hotel bar and the many beautiful lounges were permanently empty - why pay €5 for a glass of wine when you can get the same one for €1.50 around the corner? This meant meant the hotel was somewhat devoid of atmosphere every evening, which was a bit disappointing.

Pity we didn't know everything was closed on Mondays. We would have loved to see this towns shops etc and especially the palace which is next to the convent

Fabulous experience
This hotel has a great location, next door to the "King's Palace". The building, an old monastery with more than 500 years, has all the comfort that you will desire with the plus of the emotional experience of staying in a historical place. The service was fabulous and the food at the restaurant was a delicacy. I highly recommend this hotel.

Beautiful pousada with tons of history
Just to let you know, this pousada's sign on the front states it is the Pousada D. Joao IV. The name of this pousada on hotels.com is Pousada Convento de Vila Vicosa. So don't think there are two pousadas at Vila Vicosa like I did. Also, it is located right next to the Ducal Palace. Our GPS had it a few streets over. I really loved this pousada, which is a converted convent. The grounds are gorgeous and include a pool. The staff was super friendly. They even hosted an egg hut for the children staying there over Easter. The pousada itself is modern, but they have kept the ambiance of the convent by leaving the religious paintings and other details. Our room was very tidy and quaint and included a tiny balcony. The bed in our room was really two twin beds set together, which is common in for European hotels. The complimentary breakfast was super yummy and consisted of eggs, various meats, cheeses, cereal, assorted pastries and fruit. One other thing, after you check in, you must forward your hotels.com confirmation email to their hotel, so they know you paid for the stay online. I really enjoyed my stay at this pousada & highly recommend it.

Old world with Portuguese charm
The kids loved to spend the night at this beautifully restored XVI century property that has already celebrated 500 years of existence! Even though the rooms are a bit "rustic" and the furniture worn and in need of some remodeling, the history associated with this old convent transported us back to the roots of Portugal and it certainly made up for all these minor comfort shortcomings we noticed. However, I ought to point out that the bed and linen were very comfortable and the furnace worked extremely well during the cold winter night we spent in Vila Viçosa. The staff was extremely courteous and at arrival the receptionist insisted on giving us a welcome tour of the property and pointed out to some interesting historical facts, showed us the beautiful frescos and took the time to educate us about the convent´s history. Our room rate came with a delicious breakfast that keep us full until mid-afternoon. Historic and wonderful.
Amazing! What a privilege to stay in this historic building that has been beautifully equipped to accommodate modern-day travellers. We ate in a dining room that had a wall painted painted in the 1700s! Friendly staff, wonderful room and huge variety of choices at the included breakfast.

Beautiful, calm and very atmospheric.
You feel the history of the place as soon as you walk in. I could not believe some of the amazing frescos on the walls! The staff are extremely competent and welcoming and the pousada is itself a very interesting place to visit. The pool is peaceful and pleasant, it is located next to the main attraction in town and there are quite a few good restaurants nearby as well.
