Wildlife fans are drawn to the Elephant Seal Rookery to watch these huge blubbery mammals in their natural environment. The sanctuary spreads across six miles of sandy shoreline around Point Piedras Blancas lighthouse on California's central coast.
Elephant seals first began using the unspoilt beach as a rookery in 1990 and at last count, a whopping 20,000 elephant seals were said to make up this ever-expanding colony. Luckily for visitors, the Elephant Seal Rookery is free to enter and open every day of the year. The seals can be watched at a safe distance from observation platforms, from where you can enjoy a close-up view of adult seals, baby seals and adorable seal pups as they sleep, play, fight and make loads of noise.
If you’re looking for a hotel near Elephant Seal Rookery, start your accommodation search in the secluded nearby town of San Simeon. From dreamy beachfront inns to cheap motels, there are rooms here to suit all tastes and budgets, and they’re all within easy reach of the Elephant Seal Rookery.
Located along Route 1, the Elephant Seal Rookery is not reachable by public transport, so you'll need to hire a car or book a taxi. The car park is one mile south of the entrance to the Piedras Blancas Light Station Natural Area. From there, you can stroll along an accessible boardwalk leading to viewing platforms above the beaches. If you want to explore further and see more seal beaches, hiking trails lead towards the lighthouse. Note that the rookery doesn't have toilets, shelter or a snack bar.
Viewing areas are open every day, but peak season for spotting elephant seals is from December until March when the mammals return here to give birth and mate. In fact, the highest concentration of loved-up seals can be found on Valentine's Day on February 14.
