El Fontan Market can trace its history back to the early 16th century, although the current building dates back to 1885\. It was constructed on a site once occupied by a Jesuit college. In 2008, the market received global attention as it was one of the locations for the hit Woody Allen movie *Vicky Cristina Barcelona*. Before stepping inside to browse through the enticing stalls, pause for a few moments to study the 19th-century building's architecture with its long sweep of arched windows. Then make your way to the stalls and shops, which are all located on one level. Purchase fresh fish that has been brought directly from the Bay of Biscay. Try local specialties such as Asturian beef, homemade chorizo, olives and pickles. Stop at the bakery for fresh bread and pastries. If you want to cook something new with all the fresh produce you've purchased, visit the market's official website for recipes. Break up your shopping trip with refreshments in the café. Asturias is one of Europe’s principal cheese-making regions be sure to sample some Asturian cheeses while you are in the market. Choose from more than 20 officially recognised cheeses from mild to strong and soft to hard. El Fontan Market is open every day except Sunday. It is located on Plaza 19 de Octubre in the old quarter of Oviedo. If you come by car, there is parking available for a fee in nearby garages.
