Near the outskirts of the attractive medieval market town of Barnard Castle, Egglestone Abbey is a fascinating Scheduled Ancient Monument that was once an important monastery. It overlooks the picturesque banks of the River Wear, and is only a short drive from numerous affordable and high-end hotels.
Established in the 12th Century, Egglestone Abbey was home to numerous monks until the 16th Century, when King Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Although much of the building has been destroyed, it is still possible to observe the remnants of the original church and the abbey's living areas. Following the Dissolution, most of the monastery was converted into farm housing, and the site was eventually sold to the State in the 20th Century.
Have a hot drink at the tearoom, then, if you have time, take a relaxing walk along the river to Barnard Castle, approximately 40 minutes away. Perched high above the River Wear, this enormous ruined castle also dates back to the 12th Century, and offers wonderful views of the river gorge. See the enchanting sensory garden, then explore the attractive market town of Barnard Castle itself. Each year, the castle also organises a special re-enactment of a Norman invasion, and in 2016 it marked the 800th anniversary of the unsuccessful Scottish siege of Teeside.
