Incredibly disappointed!

Posted 26-Sep-2016
3 am fire alarm has all of the guests out on the street in the cold for nearly 30 minutes. Then when I had to leave three days early due to a family emergency back in the states they refused to refund even one night of my stay. No alarm clock (or any clock) in the room, and almost ZERO drawer space. I will never stay there again.

Very mediocre

Pros: Beautiful room with great views
Cons: Staff
Apart from a truly beautiful deluxe room with excellent views, the George is substandard for what you pay. Here's what I found very disappointing: first, there are no parking facilities and the only self parking location they referred us to was a mile away. Second, they have only one consierge on duty, which results in a long wait for service (15mins on average). Third, only one elevator was operating on the deluxe room wing - resulting in long lines and stupidly long waits. The second elevator was down for 4 of the 5 days we stayed, and was still not operating when we checked out. Inexcusable for a high end hotel. Fourth, hotel reception staff was polite enough but totally unresponsive when they saw lines at the consierge desk or anywhere else; they never took the initiative to step in and offer to help.

I have never stayed anywhere where the staff was this friendly and helpful. Every interaction was a joy.

Well-situated, nice hotel.

The hotel is very nice and in a great location in the New Town. The staff are helpful and efficient. The attached cafe has great food and coffee (very strong!).

disappointing stay

Cons: read above
we checked in ok but no one to show us to our room (114) it was difficult to follow the number directions , we were awoke at 3am by the fire alarm and made our way outside along with some other guests ,no response from the duty staff at reception on where to go or what to do , no info as we stood outside in the cold ,no roll call for room staying in etc very poor heath and safety standards, someone was distributing foil wrap arounds to about 1 in 20 people to keep warm( clearly not enough to go around) , after about 40 mins it was announced we could go back inside after the fire brigade had cleared the alarm ,we were told that someone had been smoking in a bedroom which is not the fault of the hotel in its self other than that there are no notices in the rooms not to do so ,breakfast was of poor quality as was the service, the tea was cold the coffee undrinkable ,two home style toasters on the bar for the whole room, one did not work so the wait was 10 deep 20 mins ! We had to wait for a refill of tea for 15 mins and a further five for milk ,there was no apology or explanation for the disturbance from the night before , they could not find the concierge to get our bags and he had the only key to the bag room ,this took nearly 20 mins to depart

Center of it all

The beds in the Jr suites are great, not so in the standard rooms! The hotel staff is amazing😊 Try to get a room at back of hotel, as the front is loud from 9-11pm & 1-3am.

Overrated, overpriced.

You have to make your own toast for breakfast! There were only two toasters and one of them wasn't working. The queue was very long and the guests were complaining. The manager didn't care because same thing happened on the second day. Quite unpleasant experience.

Old classic in great George Street position

Posted 29-Aug-2016
Pros: Location.
Cons: Food. Service. Bathrooms.
The George is a famous old Edinburgh hotel. In its heydey it must have been wonderful, but although it is past its best and in need of a good refurb, it's still well located and comfortable enough to be a sensible choice. The slightly irritable, overwhelmed staff and the probably-recently-done-but-a-bit-tired-already decor can be ignored as when you easily one of the top 5 located hotels in Edinburgh. It should be slightly better though.
