The Principal was an excellent place to stay. I was especially impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, many of whom were not native Scots, but a truly international group.

Disappointing dining and bar experience

The hotel itself is beautiful and the room was clean and comfortable The breakfast dining seemed chaotic and not well managed very expensive. Lots of waiting around for milk for cereals and plates for the buffet breakfast, Tables are placed very close together no element of Enjoyment of the experience, as you felt you were impinging on others personal space. The bar was very similar we returned to the hotel to relax and have a liquor coffee we were directed to the hotels coffee shop next door - we had a liquor coffee the previous day at the hotel enjoying its ambience so we returned from the busy coffee shop and explained we wanted to sit in the bar and have a liquor coffee the staff appeared to not want us to have coffee in the hotel but they prepared it. I would not stay again because dining in a hotel is part of my holiday experience and in this case is was not enjoyable compared to other establishments.

Staff were excellent. We were unhappy with the size of our room on 4th floor, in as much that it was so small that there was n o space for a chair and we had to sit or lie on our bed if we wished to remain in our room.

Nice clean hotel in downtown. Friendly staff and excellent service.. Standard rooms are pretty small for extended stay.

Restaurant was 6 star staff was amazing location was great, room was clean and comfortable overall was great experience would definitely stay again

Everything was great. One thing I didn't like was the lack of AC in my room as there were a few very hot days.

Sweet view of Firth of Forth, Comfy Room

Comfy room! I was delighted to realize I had a view of the Firth of Forth, which I am embarrassed to admit I didn't realize upon check-in (first time to Scotland). It was so comfortable that when I laid down for a "nap" I ended up sleeping for 11 hours! It's quiet, too. Though the hotel is very busy (as it should be), one doesn't hear ambient noises -- it's well insulated. Nice toiletries, linens, etc. My only quibbles: the coffee could use improvement. It's just these little Nescafe instant packets, same as one would have at a 3-star lodge; and there should be a warning about the hotel towel rack. I am sure those used to upscale hotels are aware it must be hot, but I wasn't, and leaned against it (ouch!) by mistake. I'm fine now, and I love how it warms the towels. But I would upgrade the coffee and post a tiny sign by the rack, or at least warn the guests upon checkin. I also had no idea the fridge and coffee maker were hidden in the cabinet, and found them by accident. However, overall it's still five stars and now that I know it's animal-friendly, can't wait to come back with my four-legged sidekick :)!

Location: all the city tour buses are a short walk away.
