Down at the heels -very outdated hotel

Posted 25-Sep-2016
Pros: The location. It's a classic building, high ceilings, ornate plaster and generally you can see the beauty of the hotel from past days.
Cons: Almost everything you would expect in a well located hotel could be improved.
Location: The location is right across from the train station. Short walk to shopping, restaurants and sights. Location was the main reason I chose the hotel.
Classic old building and excellent location to the trains, shopping and the sights but badly in need of a complete renovation. Staff are efficient and courteous but mostly eastern European and really need training on customer service. They are nice people but need better direction. Hotel has many steps up from the street and we experienced many older tourists have great difficulty both with the heavy, ill fitting, entrance doors and carting luggage up the stairs. Staff stay at the desk and they need a call button to help check-ins and carry up luggage. Floors covered in layers of carpet and the creaking of the floors in halls and rooms will keep you awake at night. The doors are old and use actual keys that you have to hand in at the desk when you go out for the day. Didn't really feel my room was secure and no personal safe in the room. The beds are old and extremely uncomfortable. The bathrooms have been updated and water pressure is excellent but the cleaning staff are missing the mold beginning to grow in the bathrooms. No face cloths are provided and the towels are thin. Breakfast is full Scottish and nothing else imaginative is provided. Basic cereals, white bread, canned mandarins oranges and grapefruit every day. This hotel could be so much more and the owners need to invest in this prime location in Edinburgh. A major update to the hotel and training for staff and more effective management could make this hotel a 5 star location

Would Stay Again

Posted 24-Sep-2016
Fabulous view of the castle from our windows. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was much more than we expected, quite a surprise to find such a huge selection. Our room was quite spacious and the bathroom was large and seemed to have been updated within the last year or so. It is located just across the street from the train station and is just a short walk to the Royal Mile. Would definitely stay here again. Please be aware of the stairs from street level to the reception desk. We didn't have any problem with the stairs, but if you cannot climb a flight of stairs, you should consider a different location.

Close to rail and local sights

One complaint about this hotel was the stairs. No lift or help with our bags. Loved the location and easy to get around town. Staff was helpful with directions.

Excellent location in city centre of Edinburgh

Posted 17-Sep-2016
Pros: Extremely friendly and competent staff - ideal for my purpose for one night
Cons: A larger or a second lift would be good. Also double-glazing in the bathroom as well as a magnifying mirror
Location: As mentioned above, the location is ideal for my purposes: close to Waverley Station, many museums and shops
I wanted to be right in the centre of Edinburgh to see two different exhibitions at the National Galleries as well as having a good meal at Cafe St. Honore nearby.

Excellent location on Prince's Street

Posted 15-Sep-2016
Excellent location close to the castle, Royal Mile and also New Town. The room was comfortable and larger than I expected for an old hotel. The lounge area overlooking the castle serves breakfast and a nice afternoon tea. The staff were very helpful - I was able to order room service after arriving at the hotel at 2AM. Only possible negative is the lack of elevator from the street level to the reception area - but you can ring a bell and staff will help you. There is a modern elevator for the floors above the reception. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

Old Waverley Edinburgh

Posted 15-Sep-2016
Room clean but small and dated for the price, also noisey with no view, except for a new build which had bright lights on all night. We were there for four days and the lift never worked, we were on the fourth floor.breakfast good, not impressed with the evenin meal, first time we have ever had to send a meal back, as the pork was pink and bloody.

Pleasant hotel right in the heart of the city.

Posted 15-Sep-2016
Pros: The old world charm and cleanliness was good
Cons: The lift broke down which caused problems and took a few days to be repaired which was annoying.
Location: Good views from hotel window across the park and station, plenty to look at and then to go and visit
We enjoyed our stay being in the heart of the city was a very different experience for us. Plenty to see and do. Edinburgh is a beautiful city to visit.

Great location but that's about it.

Posted 10-Sep-2016
Pros: location, staff and it's potential to be a great hotel.
Cons: See above
Location: It's in the very heart of Edinburgh. Enough said.
Let me start by saying this hotel is in an absolute PRIME position and that the staff try very hard under very difficult conditions however, this hotel needs refurbishing top to bottom. Starting at the diabolical front door right down to the creaking, broken floorboards, fixing the almost total lack of ventilation in many rooms, and insuring the lift actually goes to the ground floor! A total waste of a beautiful old building right in the heart of Edinburgh. I could write a small book about our stay here but will spare you that. The owners need to get with a great design team and have a good hard look at what they could do with this potential gem!

Centrally located, no hotel parking

Posted 07-Sep-2016
The Old Waverly is located on Princes St directly opposite the Scott Monument. It is situated in walking distance from all major sights, and in easy access of restaurants and shopping. We had a car from our drive in other parts of Scotland and it was inconvenient that there was no parking attached to the hotel. This was not explicit in the advert. The Waverly has an agreement for reduced parking fees at a parking garage about a 12-15 minute walk away from the hotel. Our room was adequate but the lighting in the bedroom and bathroom was dim. Full breakfast is provided and it was fairly good, particularly since we were able to order some items, such as eggs cooked to our preference, in addition to the buffet. The croissants were the best item. A comfortable stay but not the best value for the cost.
