Nice hotel, walking distance to beach and town

Pros: Spa and leisure facilities, public areas and proximity to beach and North Berwick.
Cons: Breakfast service and quality could be improved massively. Corridors are very tired and dingy.
Location: Beach and restaurants are all within walking distance and there is lots of choice.
Had an okay stay at the Marine. Some aspects were great but other aspects took the shine off our stay and made us think we're unlikely to be back. The location of the hotel is great, 5 min walk to beach and a 15 minute walk to North Berwick centre. The spa and leisure facilities are top notch, easily the best part of the hotel. The main public areas of the hotel (lobby, bar and restaurant) are really nice with pleasing views of the coast. The negatives, we may have been unlucky in the room allocation but I've never stayed in a hotel room so small in my life. In saying that, it had everything you needed and the bed was very comfortable but when in a hotel room to want to feel able to stretch out and relax, this room made you feel a bit trapped and we spent quite a lot of time in the public areas or out of the hotel as result. The corridors leading to rooms need renovated badly too. The breakfast was a disaster one day and just okay the next, we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated in a half busy dining room on the first morning and were then subjected to the slowest and poorest breakfast we've ever had a at a Macdonald hotel, it wasn't just us either. The second day was better in terms of speed but for the cost I would not recommend it, you can get a far better and cheaper breakfast in one of the many North Berwick restaurants.

Location excellent but run down and poor service

Room with an ocean view No cold water in the bath sink. Told staff who said it was fixed while at dinner. Wasn't fix. Brushed teeth in bathtub. Floor tile in the next room was loose. Went to the lounge for drink. It took 10 minutes to get menu, another 15 to get a drink and it wasn't busy. Staff were polite but ineffective Chair and couch fabric all worn on arms and seat fabric stained.

Nostalgic trip let down by the finer details

It's never good to be told that you would have been cheaper to go direct to the hotel to book, but just makes you a bit fed up that you have spent way more than you needed to for the romantic trip. But our room on the third floor had a lovely view out to sea and the holiday commenced. It was quiet - a midweek break after easter when most schools were back - and that was nice. However for a quiet hotel it was a bit disconcerting that there was an almost continuous rumble (initially I thought the next room were showering rather a lot - in the end I realised that it was the motor for the lift, and as such was pretty much continuous from 6am - midnight. Bearing in mind I had now realised I had forked out clearly too much for a sea-view room already it was a bit disheartening. The bar was nice, although every time we decided to approach the bar the bar staff seemed to disappear. The spa facilities were more than I remembered from a previous visit, although my husband reported the men's changing rooms to be a "wee bit smelly" and the fact our trip coincided with the end of a children's swimming lesson the ladies was a bit noisy to come out of the thermal suite's relaxation. The room was clean, there was a good selection of teas in the room, and the view was amazing to wake up to. I will probably be back - as the Marine holds happy memories for me - but I will remember to book direct and will ask to be away from the lift machinery.

Nice spot by the ocean

The spa was nice, though not all of it was working. Overall the hotel was kind of "worn out" looking, but the room was nice, and location was good.

Excellent hotel, great location, friendly staff and good food. Disappointed to only have a double bed. Room big enough for king. Poor sleep due to this.

Don't try to swing your cat!

Lovely helpful attentive staff. However my 'double' room was extremely small with a tiny bathroom. It was essentially a single room, into which a 4ft 6ins bed had been squeezed. I finally found the tea tray on the top shelf of the wardrobe > there was nowhere else to put it! There was no plug point which the kettle could reach, except by putting it on the floor. If the price was low, perhaps one would accept this, but with a room rate of over £100 a night, the word profiteering comes to mind.

Enjoyed our short stay(2 nights). Found the location and views excellent.I think the hotel is undergoing a refurbishment. A lot of the furnishings need upgraded and are looking somewhat tired. Carpets in the lounge area, bar and parts of the stairways are threadbare.Bar service for snacks slow.

Location: Many & varied
Breajfast was super, staff very attentive however reception staff need to remember who pays their wages & stop being superior but after 43 years in the catering industry things dont change
