We stayed for one night for our wedding anniversary and it was beautiful! If I was to have any suggestions, better toilet facilities for ladies in the dining/bar area would be wonderful!

Polite staff, clearly very well trained to a high standard and the hotel is simply spectacular. Room is beautiful, really nicely decorated and the bed is so comfy and soft. It's such a tiny detail but the heating was on in the bathroom when I arrived so the room was toasty and warm when I got there, so relaxing after a very long drive. Was also able to have a hot bath which was excellent. There is also a lovely affectionate cat that lives at the hotel, very sweet little lady. This was raised to the hotel staff but two men attempted to enter my room at around 10.30-11pm on my first night - from the sound of lots of keys and the fact they put a key into the door, it conceded me it may have been staff. When this was reported the front desk were very helpful and said they would investigate. Despite this I wouldn't say the hotel felt unsafe. Parking was a bit challenging at times but considering the age of the site this is unavoidable. The only thing I'd say they could improve on is the lighting on the drive up to the hotel - as the paths to get out are very narrow some better lighting would be appreciated. Thank you all for a lovely stay in Durham ❤️

A beautiful idyllic setting … only fault was the water wasn’t hot enough to have a shower .. and didn’t have a Wi-Fi code ..

Beautiful castle and grounds. Its a bit like a maze getting round it. Lots of stunningly beautiful rooms to relax and chill and have a drink or two. Drinks are not cheap but priced around the going rate. Its a great base to explore surrounding towns. We were staying as family of 10 enjoying the run up to Christmas in a beautiflly decorated castle. The only let down for us was the feble camp beds that we had to use for our 8 and 6yr old. They were uncomfortable and sunken in middle giving little support.

An absolute treat
the property is wonderfully charming, the staff are friendly and attentive, the food could not have been better. We had dinner in the bar, and the breakfast service the next day, and both were just superb. We upgraded to a tower room, and it was spacious and full of thoughtful details, like a hidden passage behind a book shelf to the toilet/powder room. It was a treat to get a modern day castle experience. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the wifi was excellent….and overall we were very happy with the experience. This property is not recommended to anyone with mobility issues as its many stairs, passageways and uneven floors you have to carry your luggage through to get to your room. There are cottages in the courtyard that are more accessible, but accessing anything else on the property would be quite challenging. The room was very luxuriously fitted in the 1980s or 90s when it was likely last updated…faded /worn fabrics, red rumpled carpet and stained walls in the washroom, It looks quite tired, and could benefit from a refurbishment but was clean and perfectly comfortable. It was superbly quiet, and we had an excellent sleep We loved seeing Poppet and the cozy fireplaces in the lounge were so inviting…loads of charming details all over the property. It was fun to explore and quite the adventure just locating our room

the library hidden passage to powder room is a very cool feature

My favourite place to stay in the north east
What can you say about Lumley Castle? That’s not already been said? The rooms are beautifully and tastefully decorated. I’m disappointed that they have switched from the white company. My favourite four luxury toiletries, but I suppose that’s a commercial decision? The staff are friendly. The breakfast is excellent, and always freshly prepared, the rooms are luxurious and well appointed with nice little extras like biscuits and crisps included.

What a lovely place. Well kept and converted from its original building to a high standard. The staff are lovely, the food lovely and a short drive/walk into Chester-le-Street. Some lovely grounds though weather limited what we could explore. The state room that we stayed in was spacious and very posh feeling! Free snacks and drinks, tea making facilities and free TV/wifi. Overall could not fault our stay and we may make it an annual booking.

Wonderful property, every part of the castle has been thought out to suit its history but also comfort for guests. Only thing I can think of as criticism, is lack of milk in the rooms for tea & coffee haha (British problems) bring your own milk if youre a tea fiend like me. I will deffo be returning to this astounding establishment for the really lovely & friendly staff. They all deserve pay rises if you ask me after running up and down all the stairs when there is room service available 😁

I really wanted to love this property, but it was rather long in the tooth. It looked like it had been remodeled in 1987 and then never upgraded again. There were bees in my room and it was damp and musty. The staff was a bit cold and not interested in sharing the history or stories of the castle. There is so much potential here and it would take so little to add a bit of magic and excitement to the atmosphere.

Go to holiday inn - cheaper and just as goos
Stayed 3 nights. Wifi was out because of a storm a few days prior. Stayed in the Sir Ralph suite. Room was cute, but was not serviced first day. Bottled Water, snacks and tea were never refilled. Bathtub took forever to drain. Staff was friendly, but not worth the cost.

The castle is a unique place to stay and the staff were friendly and helpful. However it is tired and not very clean. Quite a lot of dust in the rooms and some without wardrobes to place clothes. The quality in the restaurant is poor. Breakfast was really poor, juice is just a concentrate, the cold buffet is processed not fresh. The hot food was not cooked very well just stodgy and sometimes served cold. I think overall this place is a 3 star. Also an electric car charge point would be an improvement.

Beware buying cheaper but it is only the room
Whilst the room was clean and comfortable it was very small, if you book direct with hotel the rooms are much bigger but booking with a third party which is much cheaper then the rooms allocated are the least attractive, this has happened a number of times.
