"Clean but dated rooms."
We booked 3 rooms to attend a family event. All where similar in condition and size. Room was reasonably clean but furniture not moved to clean behind or underneath as we found whilst searching for a dropped item of jewellery. Beds were clean and comfortable. Staff were fantastic and very helpful. Rooms are very dated and would benefit from a refurb, however for us it served it's purpose and we'd go back.

"Great Value"
Lovely location by the river. The public rooms were rather careworn but we had a nicely furnished bedroom, large with room for 2 single beds and a double. The only criticism would be the lack of powerpoints for today's phones and tablets but at the price we paid we can't complain too much.

"Friendly staff"
We stayed here to visit Kynren (as did many others). When I booked I'd looked online and found that the hotel was less than a mile walk to the site. We wanted to walk as we knew that the car parking/bus situation afterwards is a nightmare and very congested. However, upon checking in the staff told us it was nearer 3 miles due to the route, and the other distance must have been 'as the crow flies'! It was walkable but it took about 45 minutes at a fair pace (uphill on the way back!). The hotel is old and has a coaching inn feel to it. It is tired in places but is OK for an overnight stay for an event. The bedroom was clean and tidy and had everything you needed. Our wardrobe was just a pole along an alcove but was adequate for one night. The staff were friendly and helpful, the receptionist in particular. We had the Sunday carvery which was ok, although we hadn't realised it was to end five minutes after we got our first lot of food! We probably would have chosen to eat something else has we known. We only had continental breakfast which was £4.50. I did think this was quite pricey for what you got - cereal and toast, no pastries or croissants and no offer of a refill of coffee. I probably wouldn't stay again but if someone wanted to stay for Kynren I'd tell them about it so they could decide themselves.

"Hotel steeped in history and set in lovely grounds"
If you eat dinner in the restaurant, stick to the Chefs recommendations. Service is good but the costumes are a bit "Disney" a good place to be if you are going to the cricket.

"Beautiful venue but let down by the food"
First impressions were wow! My room was amazing. Beds comfy. Great sized rooms. However the restaurant to me was somewhat disappointing. The food was just about ok, but overpriced for what it was. And I was eating alone when most others were dining as couples. Service was pretty slow. I had to ask for more bread as none was offered with the rather meagre starter. Then I was charged for 2 glasses of wine on my bill when I'd clearly only had had one. No apology was forthcoming and I had to wait a while before they came back with the revised bill with the additional glass of wine knocked off. I would have thought they shouldn't charge for the glass I had had personally, and certainly what's happen ended when I have been overcharged elsewhere. If I were the manager I'd be starting improvements in these areas as this would really improve the overall level of satisfaction. This is a beautiful hotel and I would stay again despite these issues.

"Where it was good it was good but!"
I was given my key when I booked in as it was almost an hour after the 2 p.m. start but when I got to the room it was no ready and I had to return to reception to get it sorted out. Once it was ready it was in good order and well supplied on the beverage tray and in the bathroom

"Good hotel, good location"
Twelve hour delay, thanks to aircraft problems, did not phase staff. They seemed used to such problems. The hotel is OK for its price-range.

Pocket Guide: Hotels with WiFi Hotels in Durham

Good WiFi is no longer a luxury demanded by only the most discerning of business travellers. It's now something that many guests expect as a matter of course when staying at a hotel, whether they are enjoying an adventurous family holiday or attending a conference from overseas. Whilst many of County Durham's hotels and guesthouses are located rurally, WiFi connectivity is generally very good, with many great hotels with Wi-Fi in Durham and the surrounding areas. The internet doesn't have to get in the way when you're travelling, and can be a great tool organising your trip.

Get Connected with Durham Hotels with WiFi

The reason why internet is so good in County Durham is thanks largely to the Digital Durham initiative, which aims to provide the homes, business and hotels in the region with fast fibre broadband - achieving speeds above 24Mbps for most (more in the larger settlements). If you're travelling on business, it can be very frustrating reaching your accommodation and making the unfortunate discovery that local broadband is below par. When you visit County Durham, however, whether you're staying in a city like Darlington, or on the outskirts of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, WiFi is likely to be good quality and free to use, for example at the Jury's Inn Middlesbrough, which benefits from a city-centre location in easy reach of top attractions such as Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art.

    Free WiFi in County Durham

While good internet is a must for business travellers, essential for firing off e-mails, contacting head office and organising meetings and conferences, the modern holidaymaker also benefits from good internet provision, using it to share photographs and keep tabs on social media, but also to research, organise and book great days outs. With so much to do in County Durham, from amazing woodland walks to fascinating museums and historic landmarks, the internet can be a great tool for hammering out an itinerary - and is even more useful when its free at the point of use! It's normal for County Durham Hotels to offer free WiFi internet, some examples include the Hall Garth Hotel and Country Club, set in 70 acres of parkland, and the Sportsman Hotel in Stockton-on-Tees.
