The Space: This superior two bedroom apartment was named after one of the famous Prince Bishops of Durham, set within a newly renovated grade II listed Georgian building in the heart of Durham City Centre. Throughout the 19th century, when Queen Victoria was on the throne and Durham’s coalfields put the North East at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution, some of the county’s most prominent figures would meet here, at 52 Old Elvet. Here deals were made, royalty was entertained and, when dinner was over, cigars smoked, and port poured, they would retire to a purposely-built billiard room to the rear of the building. Designed by Charles Hodgson Fowler – also architect to the Dean and Chapter of Durham – this vast, vaulted room, whose glass panelled roof is supported by polished timbers in the Art Nouveau style, has now been beautifully converted into two, highly contemporary, split-level apartments. Both entered from the rear of the building, they are noticeably more modern. This expertly designed apartment has everything you could need for a self catering stay. The open plan kitchen-living area is perfect for social meal times or evenings in. Both bedrooms are bright spaces, featuring velux windows, comfortable beds and crisp white linens. It boasts lush green landscapes but it also has busy cobbled streets with independent shops, bars and restaurants. Durham has plenty of history within its walls. One of the most spectacular historic sites is Durham Cathedral. Constructed between 1903 and 1133, this towering building is a shining example of Norman architecture. Durham train station is a 15-minute walk from the apartment so nearby towns and cities can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station. There are plenty of bus routes throughout Durham. Hop on the Arriva 6 route to visit Barnard Castle or the number 22 which travels through Seaham and Sunderland. Instructions sent didn't state this and we were left wandering up and down the three floors of the main building looking for the apartment. In the end we had to call customer service for the correct location. The apartment was nice, clean and in a good location. However, the 5 spaces for parking were right outside the front door of the apartment. Although it stated free parking it was roulette trying to get a space. I don't know if it was other residents or chancers using it. We ended up having to pay for parking due to this. The apartment had a dish washer but no tablets, there was no washing up liquid and no tea spoons. The TV only gave BBC channels with a good reception. All other channels the sound was broken and picture pixilated. Also the TV wouldn't connect to the WiFi to enable apps like Iplayer and netflix to be used. Called customer services they said it would be fixed in the morning. Admittedly the following night the channels were better but not perfect and still the TV wouldn't hook up to the WiFi so still no apps. The following evening when we got back we we back to square one, only a good reception on BBC channels. The other annoying feature was the unused University teaching block next to the property car park must have some issue with its alarm. It went off 5 times during our stay including late at night for approx 20 minutes. All in all would we return?
