In Scotland’s southernmost region and on the banks of the River Nith lies the market town and former royal burgh of Dumfries. Locally known as the “Queen of the South”, this historic town has close ties with Scotland’s National Bard Robert Burns and is home to lots of quaint hotels and pubs, and a number of important cultural sites.

The towns numerous monuments and historical offerings range from the grounds of Greyfriar’s Church where Robert the Bruce murdered John Comyn on his way to claiming the Scottish throne, to the ruins of nearby Sweetheart Abbey, built by Lady Devorgilla in 1273 in honour of her late husband.

Visit the Robert Burns Centre
