Idillic, get away from it all, location
We wanted a get away from it all location and that’s what we got. The cottage was basic but clean. No TV but WIFI (essential as teenagers were included!) It was a minimum of 45 minutes drive to beaches but worth the drive. Pointe de la Coubre being especially impressive and great for body boarding. The towers and shopping of La Rochelle also made for a good day trip. Chatellion plage was one of the closest beaches, it is a town beach but you can park right next to it and jump over the wall onto the sand, so good for an easy afternoon out. The sea was very warm! Surgères (approx 20 mins drive away) was our local town for groceries, having a huge E. Leclerc supermarket which sold anything you might need and more! The cottage owner, Paul, was very friendly and welcoming and had left milk, yogurts, fruit and a bottle of wine for us on arrival. He lives next door so was available if we had any issues. A washing machine and freezer were available for shared use. The pool was a welcome relief from the heat, not only for us but for the swallows that seemed to enjoy swooping over it to catch flies. We also enjoyed watching Paul’s hens that roam freely in the garden with their chicks (we counted 12 baby chicks in total). There are three holiday cottages in a row but each has its own outside area kept private by well managed high hedges. My only criticisms would be that the kitchen was not that well equipped (a few more mugs, tumblers, colander and large salad bowl would be a welcome addition) and there was nowhere to recycle plastic or cans so we had to bin them. But this in no way distracted from the location and relaxed vibe of the place which was excellent. Thanks Paul!
