See the views from the top of this grand building, known for its elegant replications of architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The Drum Tower stands prominently over Tianjin’s Old Town. Admire the tower’s recreated historic architecture, see a different perspective of the city from the top of its 89-foot-tall (27-metre) tower and browse the souvenir shops that line the surrounding streets.

The tower was first built during the Ming dynasty but was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in the mid-20th century. In 2001 it was rebuilt, with construction mirroring the original tower’s style. Note the traditional stonework, lacquer and wood carvings.

The tower is surrounded by four arched gates. Look closely to see the name of each gate carved into its stone arch. Inside the tower, the tour route is clearly marked. Follow it up to the first level of the building, which is dedicated to Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion and mercy. Temporary exhibits are sometimes hosted inside the tower, so find out if anything is taking place during your visit.

Be sure to check out the tower’s 3,300-pound (1,500-kilogram) iron bell on the second floor. This massive bell has a diameter of 4.6 feet (1.4 metres) and a height of 7.5 feet (2.3 metres). Ascend to the top of this three-story tower to see the wonderful views over the city.

Don’t miss the streets around the Drum Tower, which are almost always buzzing with the activity of shoppers. The neighbourhood is particularly lovely during Chinese New Year, when the streets and alleys are illuminated by traditional red lanterns.

Explore the antique shops down the north street, as well as the boutiques along the east street, which sell silk ceramics, calligraphy brushes, jewellery and other interesting souvenirs. When you’re ready for a break, head south of the tower to find many restaurants featuring local dishes, such as goubuli steamed stuffed buns.

The Drum Tower is located on Gulou Street in the city’s Nankai District and can be reached by bus or via subway to the Gulou Station. Admission is free.
