Pocket Guide: Buenavista Downtown Mexico City Hotels

Find Hotels in Downtown Mexico City

Downtown Mexico City – known to the locals simply as ‘Centro’ – has been a site of historic importance ever since it was the location of the ancient Aztec city called Tenochtitlan. There is a wide range of accommodation options available in downtown Mexico City, from budget hotels and guesthouses to luxury boutique hotels perfect if you’re looking to treat yourself during your stay in Mexico City.

Explore Historic Centre of Mexico City from Your Hotel

The centre of downtown Mexico City is undoubtedly the Zocalo – Mexico City’s main square and one of the largest urban open spaces anywhere in the world. It is impressive from first sight, with its huge Mexican flag that flies from 8am until 6pm each day.

The Zócalo has been a gathering place since Aztec times, and it is surrounded by some of the most important buildings in the city, including the Palacio Nacional – home to the offices of the president – and the Metropolitan Cathedral, that occupies the north end of the square.

Don’t miss the Aztec dancers who give performances each day on the Zócalo, and you can enjoy more music to the north of the square at Plaza Garibaldi with its gathering of Mariachi bands. This is also a good area to grab a bite to eat and a drink in one of the neighbourhood restaurants and bars.

Visit the Museums of Downtown Mexico City

Downtown Mexico City is home to some of the country’s most famous cultural attractions. The Templo Mayor archaeological site and museum is a link to Mexico’s long history as it was both the central temple, and thus the ‘centre of universe’ to the Aztecs.

The Franz Meyer Museum houses a large collection of decorative arts, while the Palacio de Bellas Artes is arguably the nation’s most important cultural centre, with its exhibitions and performances taking place in a striking building that is worth a visit in its own right.

Find a hotel in downtown Mexico City and you will have a wealth of historical and cultural treasures on your doorstep, waiting to be explored.
