Nice hotel but ....

Posted 21-Nov-2016
The City Gate is a city centre pub with 15 rooms. The rooms are well decorated but beware on cold days. There is no cenursling heating just air conditioner blowers and they just don't cut the mustard. Also some window panes are loose so draughts. The pub is nice enough and the limited menu palatable. Dan the manager is a great fellow.

Super city centre stay.

Perfect for one night stay to see gig at University. Lovely comfy bed, excellent facilities in room. More of a pub with rooms rather than hotel, all staff really helpful and welcoming. Lovely breakfast. Corridors to rooms could do without lick of paint and new carpet but rooms were fine and cosy. Excellent value for what we paid, would definitely stay again. Fab location right in the centre and parking overnight in public car park all within 100 yards.

Friendly, comfortable stay

Posted 31-Oct-2016
Location: Exeter's a beautiful city
Friendly staff, comfortable king size bed in our double room. Great cooked breakfast. A bit short-staffed. In need of a refurb, which we gathered is happening in the next few weeks. Would definitely book again.

Disappointing - Would not stay again.

I haf high hopes of this hotel from reading some reviews and seeing the online pictures but would advise others to take those with a pinch of salt. I was met by the receptionist who was sat beside the bar puffining on an e-cig... Highly unprofessional! Check in was slow as they did not know how to use the computer system. The room wad actually not bad, clean... fast wifi and reasonably comfortable bed. On the other hand, the window frame was rotting and covered in dust and cobwebs. The door into the main hall also had large gaps in the frame, this allowed the bright hall light that stayed on ALL night basically lit the room. The restaurant/pub was run down and grotty. Carpet all over was sticky and disgusting. Breakfast was not great and the local alcoholics frequent the pub at night so definitely try out some of the lovely restaurants up town rather than eat there! Finally, on my 2nd night I had awful trouble with a group of guests staying between 2 rooms. They were shouting and slamming doors all night. On ringing reception (which is unmanned) you get transferred to the duty manager sleeping on site. In my case I was transferred through to someone in a flat upstairs who didn't work in the hotel! All while the noise went on and on. If you want a cheap stay, by all means it wasn't awful however I will not be going back!

Convenient Location

Posted 25-Sep-2016 on Hotels
It was an overnight stay and to explore a little of Exeter City. although the room was clean and comfortable the rest of the building needs a little TLC. Very grubby in places. There was no lift so not really suitable for the elderly or infirm.

A standard hotel. The room was fine and spacious. The pub' s decor was past its prime. Nice pub garden and conservatory. Convenient for the centre.
