Posted 04-Jan-2016 on Hotels

Ticked all the boxes.

Just a stopover for business. Hotel ticked all the boxes. Pub side quite empty for a Thursday, did not eat there so cannot comment on food although breakfast was good. Freindly helpful staff on check in and out. Reasonable value, handy for city centre. Would stay again.

Pros: Convenient, staff friendly and helpful.

business stay

Posted 08-Oct-2015 on Hotels
I stayed at the City Gate for one night on business in the local area. I'd read the reviews and felt comfortable that I was going to get a comfortable room in a recently refurbished pub hotel. I checked in at around 6pm and check in was easy and I was shown to my room. The stairway to the rooms wasn't especially clean and looked a little tired which made me wonder about the refurbishment. My room was mid-sized with all of the usual amenities and the bed was comfortable. My bathroom was far from clean and had a layer of dust on everything and the towels had seen better days. However, the food at the pub is outstanding and would be the only reason I would be tempted back. The menu isn't extensive but it is really good and there are specials available every day. I ordered the barbecue ribs and they were delicious! The plate arrived quickly and there was a full rack of ribs to enjoy and all for around just £12! The chips were homemade as was the coleslaw and salad that arrived with it. Overall the hotel was okay and the food outstanding.
