Luxury?- No, OK?- Yes

Posted 12-Nov-2015 on Hotels
We chose this hotel for its location so, having read some of the reviews online, we thought we'd give the Abode a try. The location of the hotel is perfect. Right by the cathedral and shops, very centrally located!. Plenty of restaurants on the doorstep and, of course, the Michelin rated restaurant in our hotel. We stayed Friday-Sunday and we found it quite busy although this didn't bother us. We had chosen a "Desirable" room, but what is so desirable about it, well, I'm no too sure... The room had a fantastic view of the cathedral and it was of a modern design. The room is quite small though with a bed in the middle of the room. The roll top bath is situated behind the bed as well as the sink. No shower. The toilet is located in the wardrobe, yes, the wardrobe!! The mattress was way too soft and gave both of us a backache. No plug sockets by the bed, so we had to ask for an extension lead. Breakfast was ok, but not worth £15, which you pay if this is not part of your deal (which ours was). For a £15 breakfast I would expect breakfast to be more than ok.... I know it doesn't sound like it, but the hotel was ok hence the 3 star review. Would we stay here again? Probably not, as there are other good hotels in the area. I will also add, that I travel frequently on business, both within the UK and abroad, so have quite a lot of experience in regards to hotels and their various standards. This hotel is ok, but not a luxury hotel, which some sites advertise it as.

in cathedral close

Posted 26-Oct-2015
Pros: The position. Breakfast was good.
Cons: Heating / air conditioning
Air conditioning seemed to blow cold air even when I turned the temperature up and it wasn't that warm. I turned it off. Shower had a half screen and half open so it soaked the bath mat. There was only decaffeinated coffee provided in room. It seemed a bit over-priced.

Great location to explore Exeter

Posted 22-Oct-2015 on Hotels
This is an old Hotel right in the heart of Exeter but close to the Cathedral and Castle. The rooms was very nice with plenty of space. The only issue I found was that in the Bathroom the shower screen was not wide enough and so the water leaked onto the bathroom floor. Otherwise this is a great Hotel to explore Exeter and good value. The bed was extremely comfortable - would stay again

Loved the location

It was great to be right in the centre of things. The pub was perfect for drinks and a very good pub dinner.

Short break in Exeter

Posted 27-Sep-2015
Pros: Location, staff, general mood.
Cons: TV was small.
Location: Many attractions in close proximity in Exeter.
Overall a very pleasant visit. Friendly and helpful staff. We booked the lowest rate room, which was small but adequate, well presented and clean the TV was pitifully small however considering the now low cost of large format TVs these days. There was some noise towards the end of the night from the pub opposite, but the room had secondary double glazing so had attempted to reduce the impact. Breakfast (included in our rate) was very nice and well prepared. We ate in the restaurant which was a little disappointing for fine dining; superb appetiser, great starter but an average main for both of us. Took afternoon tea which was terrific, four excellent sandwiches, fives pieces of cake a two scones with cream and jam each, so plenty! We took some of the cake with us which the staff put in small plastic tubs to keep fresh. Hotel in a great position for exploring Exeter. Recommended car park within easy walking distance.

Hotel reception is chaotic. Too many things going on / unmanned etc Yet again 'systems were down adding to the general chaos Initial room allocation was unsatisfactory ( noisy) but on request ( and more queuing at reception) a better room was allocated

Central Exeter

Posted 06-Sep-2015
Pros: Hotel staff. Location. Breakfast. Bathrooms were new.
Cons: Good do with a little refurbishment in the public areas.
Location: Couldn't be more central - close to everything.
Right at the heart of Exeter. Hotel staff very good. They swapped our room without a fuss when we complained it was too noisy. Breakfast was great.
