Great location, excellent hotel

From moment of arrival happy friendly staff, superb location and lovely contemporary rooms. We booked the "fantastic" room overlooked cathedral, extremely comfortable bed and huge bathroom. We stayed 2 nights as busting Devon country show. Recommend if you want fabulous dining and great steak to book restaurant you could walk to called Circa 1924 - very popular so book in advance!

Pros: Location
Staff were polite but young and inexperienced. Felt like management were away for the night! Small room, no view other than pigeons and heating flues. Comfortable bed but cheap bedding. Wedding party meant champagne bar was off limits early evening, when we did go for a pre dinner drink the seating was comical (think pre-school classroom). Not wanting fizz we chose from the gin menu which listed the merits of the variety of gins on offer and how they were mixed with different tonic waters suited to their botanical characteristics. A load of baloney maybe, but when charged £10 1/2 (that's what the price list says! £10.50 to you and me) you expect to get the posh tonic. When we pointed out the tiny bottle of Schweppes that arrived with the drink was a mistake, we were told that's all they had. Dinner in the restaurant was good but for the price they charge service could have been quicker, tables more intimate and a tablecloth would have been nice. Felt like a cafe and I can tell you the life story of the couple at the table next to us! Breakfast was good but took almost 2hrs. Coffee took 1/2 hr. My husband's porridge arrived at the same time as his full English - perhaps they were trying to tell him something?! Once again no sign of any management. Lots of apologies from the staff but must have been a nightmare for housekeeping who couldn't get into our room until we checked out. Lovely location but sadly couldn't recommend based on this experience.

you don't get what you expect

the room was too noise, making it impossible to sleep or work. the bathroom was old and urgently needed a refurbishment. the view was horrible. overall: does not deserve the ratings and certainly does not belong to this category.

Great location..disappointing rooms

Posted 20-Mar-2016
This hotel is very central and right across from Exeter Cathedral. Sadly that's where it ends. The room we stayed in had a window but no view whatsoever, which was not highlighted when booking. The room was also very small as was the ensuite, with the sink for some reason being in the most impractical position possible. The breakfast was nice but not as good as other boutique 4 star hotels we have stayed in before. Disappointing!

Good location but that is where the good finishes

Pros: Location
Check in was fine, but that it just went downhill from there! The room I had can only be described as a cupboard. It was so small that there was only room for the bed and a tiny desk. The bathroom was even smaller. It was almost impossible to get into the bathroom and close the door. To make matters worse was the room was over the bar which played extremely loud music late into the night. I phoned down at 11.30pm and again 15 minutes later to complain. Neither calls had any effect, the music played on! In the morning I had to contort myself into the shower which then proceeded to run hot and cold either freezing me or scolding me. On check out I complained, giving a list of what went wrong. I was given a very weak apology. Nobody offered to make good my experience or appease me in any way. This hotel is charging a premium and not delivering. I paid £ 150 for a cupboard that played loud music late into the night and was rewarded with a freezing cold or scolding hot shower in the morning. Don't bother with this hotel there are plenty of better place to stay in Exeter.

Exceptional location, charming room

Beautiful, updated, cozy and well appointed room in a charming, character hotel with a lot of history. The bed was very comfortable and the view was amazing. Great place to stay and take your time exploring the area because naps and time spent in the room were a treat - so you could pace yourself nicely. The quality and attitude of the staff was a bit inconsistent - there were some great people at reception and a few duds I'm afraid. My daughter and her boyfriend were not treated well by staff when she came to pick me up. I will stay there again!

Modernity meets History

Superb old fashioned courtesy combine with luxurious room facilities which make this long established hotel the best 5 star in Exeter. I was given a premium view out to the city's beautiful mediaeval cathedral overlooking the Cathedral green. The cooked breakfast was faultless and the discounted rate at around £60 made the entire Sunday night a pleasure. I walked to the superb local art house cinema - the Picture House in 5 minutes and indulged in a cream tea in the cafe opposite. It made my professorial visit to Exeter University very special.

Pros: The breakfast
Location: Great central position
The room we stayed in was small and the floor slanted upwards and so do not go if you have balance issues!! Bathroom small and was not made clear the standard of the room as I thought we were booking a room with a stand alone bath in!! Breakfast good but took ages to arrive. Bed comfortable.
