Devanahalli Fort is best known as the birthplace of Tipu Sultan, famous for winning wars in 18th century southern India. The fort at Devanahalli has decorative east and west entrances leading you into a vast estate of approximately 20 acres.
Explore Devanahalli Fort’s 12 semi-circular bastions and temples lie within the fortification. Hunt out the Dravidian Venugopalaswamy temple dedicated to a form of the Hindu God Vishnu. The ruins of Tipu’s birthplace are marked with a plaque a short walk from the fort itself.
Devanahalli Fort is close to Kempegowda International Airport, so there are several places to stay nearby. There are luxury five-star hotels at the airport, as well as a mix of budget, mid-range and deluxe accommodation in the town of Devanahalli.
Many of the hotels near Devanahalli Fort are independently owned and operated, but you’ll also find some places to stay from the low-cost Indian hotel group Treebo and the high-end resort brand Angsana.
Devanahalli and Kempegowda International Airport are connected to downtown Bengaluru by National Highway 44, the longest north-south National Highway in India.
Take this route into the city, and you’ll pass by some of the city’s best known attractions, including the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Bangalore Turf Club racecourse.
Bengaluru is also known as the Garden City of India, and its parks are one of the city’s major highlights. Cubbon Park houses the magnificent Vidhana Soudha state legislature, as well as the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, the Venkatappa Art Gallery and the second-largest aquarium in India.
Head south to the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, a tranquil place to spend a few hours. Its spectacular glasshouse, inspired by London’s Crystal Palace, often hosts flower shows and other exhibitions.
Other great things to see from your hotel near Devanahalli Fort are the Tudor-style Bangalore Palace, the Bull Temple at Bugle Rock Park, and the sprawling Hare Krishna ISKCON temple complex, five miles northwest of the city centre.
