Hotel Okura Amsterdam

Ferdinand Bolstraat 333, Amsterdam - Map
"Posh, spotless, but somewhat inconvenient location"
I had written a mixed review before, including a complaint about how their definition of "separate" beds means "two beds that are connected", and the internet is slow (throttled at an almost constant 1.97Mbps download speed, even though the upload speed varied greatly). The hotel reacted to my review very fast, and very positively, asking me to speak with a Guest Services agent (Irina) who was very nice, apologized for the check-in experience, gave us a free internet upgrade, and explained that the location is really not Okura's "fault" in the sense that they built it where it is because the city had promised them there were going to be all sorts of art-related facilities built nearby. They also plan to change wifi providers so that it'll be fast even without guests having to pay extra. They even came up to our room with a tray of fruit later. It's still not particularly convenient to get downtown, or to any of the business districts.

Pocket Guide: De Pijp, Amsterdam Business Hotels

The Pipe' (its derivation is a mystery) is a quiet residential suburb with a cosmopolitan bohemian air thanks to a large number of immigrants and the recent gentrification of the area by an arty crowd. Running through the centre, the daily Albert Cuyp Market is the largest in the city. De Pijp is also renowned for its restaurants which serve some of Amsterdam's best ethnic (Syrian, Moroccan, Surinamese, Turkish etc) food.
