Great location - but not as cozy as you'd think
The Daffodil Hotel and Spa was in a great location on the lake and within walking distance of the Grassmere village and several great hikes. The room was very spacious, comfortable, well fitted and very clean.
We were quite surprised though that it was not as cozy and welcoming as we had hoped. The hotel is massive and serves a lot of rooms and guests - which they do very well - but leaves you with a feeling of it being a little cold and impersonal. The staff were very polite and helpful whenever you asked but were never really going out of their way to anticipate your needs so there's some room for improvement here (things like we had to ask about breakfast times and locations, room details, etc). The concierge staff however was incredibly helpful and helping us get to know the surrounding area, get the best local transport links (avoiding traffic), and even had print-outs with recommended local hikes (complete with wildlife notes).
The only really big disappointment was the restaurant. The food was good, but at times had surprisingly small portions. The staff felt inexperienced and at times inattentive/rude. We ate there daily for breakfast and some dinners, so this was not an isolated incident. An example is one night, a few minutes after we were seated at our table, a waiter (who we only saw once) showed up at our table with the greeting 'Have we come to a decision?'.
All in all, it was a good hotel and stay at a great location. Try and eat in the village if you can.
