Expedia car hire in Toledo comes with No Hidden Fees
Why rent a car in Toledo?
Located right in the heart of Spain, south of Madrid, Toledo is perched on a massive granite cliff, protected by the river Tagus and manmade fortifications. It’s called the ‘city of three cultures’, a reference to centuries of peaceful coexistence of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities. For its religious tolerance and rich cultural heritage, it was named a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Toledo is an excellent starting point to explore the rest of Spain. Once you’re there, you’ll be glad you arranged for a hire car in Toledo.
How to get to and around Toledo?
To get to Toledo first fly into one of the Madrid airports, the largest of which is Madrid-Barajas Airport, 56 miles from the centre of Toledo. In the city, most sights are within a 10-minute drive from the centre.
Entrance to the Old City is through the Puerta de Bisagra, a massive 10th century Moorish stone. There are no modern buildings, and the city has a medieval layout with plenty of alluring galleries, shops and cafes. Two main landmarks are the Gothic Catedral Primada Santa María de Toledo, where you can also see Goya paintings, and the Moorish palace-fortress Alcázar, an army museum, which was once home to the Castilian kings.
El Greco was born in Toledo. A replica of his former home is now a museum for his paintings, Museo del Greco. But it’s El Greco’s old parish church, Iglesia Santo Tomé, that holds an unmissable masterpiece: The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. The painting is a scene from the legend that when the pious count died, two saints descended from heaven and buried him themselves. Excellent evidence of Toledo’s multicultural history is the Santa María La Blanca, Europe’s oldest synagogue, built by Moorish craftsmen with Moorish Arabic décor and Jewish motifs and now owned by the Catholic church.
With a rental car in Toledo, some of the most attractive cities in Spain are within easy reach. Madrid is only about an hour north and has the largest and possibly most beautiful royal palace in Western Europe. Cuenca is an hour and 50 minutes away, and its incredible casas colgadas, ‘hanging houses’ sticking out of cliff edges, must be seen to be believed. Less than five hours also gets you to Seville in Andalusia, for authentic flamenco, or to Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace, to visit the well-known Picasso Museum and relax on one of the glorious Costa del Sol beaches.
