Located right in the heart of Spain, south of Madrid, Toledo is perched on a massive granite cliff, protected by the river Tagus and manmade fortifications. To get to Toledo first fly into one of the Madrid airports, the largest of which is Madrid-Barajas Airport, 56 miles from the centre of Toledo. In the city, most sights are within a 10-minute drive from the centre.

With a rental car in Toledo, some of the most attractive cities in Spain are within easy reach. Madrid is only about an hour north and has the largest and possibly most beautiful royal palace in Western Europe. Cuenca is an hour and 50 minutes away, and its incredible casas colgadas, ‘hanging houses’ sticking out of cliff edges, must be seen to be believed. Less than five hours also gets you to Seville in Andalusia, for authentic flamenco, or to Malaga, Picasso’s birthplace, to visit the well-known Picasso Museum and relax on one of the glorious Costa del Sol beaches.
An international driving licence is not necessary if you have a licence issued in a EU or EEA country, but you must be older than 18 to drive in Spain. Drive on the right.
The speed limit on motorways at present is 75mph, on open roads 62mph and in town centres 30mph. Always keep your licence, ID (passport), insurance and car hire papers with you.
