Located on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Syracuse is most famous for its ancient ruins, which include a Roman amphitheatre and the Teatro Greco. The Orecchio di Dionisio (Ear of Dionysius) has also put Syracuse on the map – a limestone cave shaped like a human ear, christened in 1586 by the painter Caravaggio. Thousands of visitors travel to the unusual spectacle each year to experience the cave’s remarkable acoustics, which mean even the slightest sound resonates throughout the structure. Historic landmarks aside, many tourists are drawn to Syracuse by its typical Sicilian beauty, from medieval lanes and picturesque piazzas to sparkling blue seas. It’s charms are hard to resist.
With a hire car at your fingertips, you will be able to explore Syracuse fully, as well as venture beyond to destinations such as Catania (an hour’s drive), where you can hike up to the iconic Mount Etna or visit the spectacular Catania Cathedral. The Teatro Massimo Bellini is also a must-see of the area – an opera house named after locally born composer Vincenzo Bellini, which boasts an incredibly beautiful, decorative interior that has to be seen to be believed.
Fly into Catania Fontanarossa Airport and from there it’s an easy 40-minute drive into the centre of Syracuse.
Beyond Syracuse, Vittoria is an hour and a half’s drive, home to the Basilica of St John the Baptist – an impressive Baroque church. Modica is also an hour’s drive, a Unesco World Heritage Site crowned by the spectacular Castello dei Conti, which sits on a hill overlooking the city.
Choose from a wide selection of hire car providers in Syracuse to suit every budget and requirement, from Firefly and Goldcar to Europcar.
The Museo Archeologico Regionale Paolo Orsi is one of the most important archaeological museums in Europe, exhibiting Roman portraits and Old Testament scenes carved from white marble. Exhibits range from the prehistoric, including rocks and fossils from thousands of years ago, through to artefacts from the Greek and Roman colonies that occupied Sicily centuries ago. Meanwhile, the city’s Duomo is also a fantastic attraction – featuring a columned baroque facade and an exquisitely carved statue of the Virgin Mary.
Beyond Syracuse, Ragusa is an hour and a half’s drive from the city, where more fantastic religious buildings await, from the Ragusa Cathedral to the Duomo of San Giorgio. Constructed in 1775, it is considered one of the seven wonders of the Baroque world by historian Maurizio Fagiolo dell’Arco.
