How to get to and around Jackson?

You are likely to feel inspired as soon as your flight lands at Jackson Hole Airport located at the base of the spectacular Teton mountain range, part of North America’s Rockies. Everything in Jackson is about mountains, unspoilt nature and amazing wildlife.

Jackson is well known for its ubiquitous elk antler arches. You can see four guarding the corners of the George Washington Memorial Park, or ‘town square’. Jackson is home to one of the world’s largest elk herds. About a mile from the town square is the National Elk Refuge, a sanctuary for elks during Jackson’s harsh winters. The antlers shed in winter are collected by the local Boy Scouts to be used in arches or to be auctioned to raise funds for the refuge.

Only a few minutes northwest of Jackson, enjoy the peace of Great Teton National Park and marvel at its pristine lakes and extraordinary prehistoric flora and fauna, dating, against the alpine backdrop of the Teton range. The park offers over 200 miles of trails to explore, or you can go hiking instead.

Almost four hours southeast of Jackson, the Red Desert, despite the lack of water and vegetation, is home to the pronghorn (also known as American antelope), a rare desert elk herd, feral horses and, in summer, a number of migrating birds.

Wyoming’s capital Cheyenne is under a seven-hour drive southwest of Jackson. If you love cowboys and rodeos, pop into to the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum to view exhibits and memorabilia from the Wild West days.

Tips and tricks for driving in the US

Most American cars have automatic transmission. Drive on the right side. An international driving permit is not compulsory but recommended in case of an accident. Carry it at all times along with ID (passport) and proof of insurance.

Speed limits vary from state to state; in general stick to 70mph on motorways. Beware that undertaking is not illegal in the US; to stay safe, don’t forget to signal before changing lanes.

Provided there is no oncoming traffic, you can turn right at red traffic lights. At a four-way stop, all cars should stop, and the one that arrived first sets off first followed by the others in the order of arrival.
