Why rent a car in Corfu Island?

Corfu Island, in the Ionian sea off Greece’s northwest coast, is a very popular tourist destination. In different periods during its history it was under the command of Venetians, the French and, after the Napoleonic Wars, the British. The architecture in Corfu reflects all three cultural influences. The capital, Corfu Town, is flanked by two castles, the Old Fortress and the New Fortress, used by the Venetian to defend themselves against the Ottomans. The fortresses provide amazing views of the coast and the old town. The old town of Corfu, with a Venetian neoclassical architecture, is a Unesco World Heritage site.

There is much to do on Corfu Island beyond the main town. In addition to a vast choice of museums, castles and monasteries to visit, the island offers stunning beaches and villages to be explored, hiking, diving and horse riding. In the town of Kanoni you can visit Mon Repos, the palace where HRH Prince Philip, the Queen of England’s husband, was born.

Tips and tricks for driving in Greece

You must be older than 18 years old to be able to drive in Greece with a foreign driver’s licence. Always carry a valid driver’s licence, proof of insurance, ID (passport) and your car hire papers.

Drive on the right side, overtake on the left. Wearing seat belts is compulsory. Unless you speak Greek, it is best to use a GPS device for directions.

Greek drivers are known to be impatient, drive aggressively and often ignore driving rules, so stick to your own right lane and don’t get in the way of others speeding ahead. The speed limit on Greek motorways is about 80mph and 32mph in residential areas. This does not stop some Greek drivers from going much faster. There are no motorways on any of the islands. Watch out for motorbike drivers, driving erratically – they are the no.1 cause of accidents in Greece.
