This was my first visit to SF and I really enjoyed the area the Kimpton is located in. It is right by Japantown and Lower Pacific Heights. There is plenty to see and different types of restaurants all in walking distance. All the other main tourist areas are a short drive away.
I only had a couple complaints. The beds, while very comfortable were a bit noisy, I think due to the base the mattresses were on. Also, I was never able to have consistent water temps for the shower, I'm not sure if this is due to the age of the building or what.
Those things aside, I would definitely stay here again. The area is very quiet and relaxing.

This stylish, modern hotel is in San Francisco's Japantown, less than 2 miles from Chinatown and Union Square.More
The hotel is located just near the end of the California cable car line and all other locations easily accessible via the Muni bus system. The room was a good size and clean and modern. We chose this hotel because of the pool which was great for the kids after a long day in the city. We booked bed and breakfast, however the kids were not allowed to eat from the buffet unless you pay $5 each for them. They just had a choice of one item (which was also available at the buffet). My children are 6 and 8 and like to be able to choose their own food. I like to think we have taught them not to be greedy or wasteful so this seemed a little mean and petty. Some of the breakfast staff were also very abrupt. Overall a good stay. A bit noisy at night from sirens outside, but that's life in a city!!!

Nice enough hotel clean and with decent facilities. But.... The streets around there particularly the walk along Ellis st to union square are lined with homeless largely mentally ill people. Not being harsh and you really feel for them (the other face of America). But the smell of urine and general degradation is not for the family or the faint hearted. As I say hotel itself and directly outside were fine. In fact it was a bit of a strange
