The Secret Cottage is a beautiful Grade II listed property which sleeps 8+2 guests, in four stylish bedrooms (with the +2 option being two single sofa beds in bedroom 4 suitable for children up to the age of 12 only), with three lovely bathrooms. Dating back to the 17th century, the property has a wealth of character features including exposed beams, flagstone flooring and a contemporary Cotswold stone fireplace with a cosy wood burning stove.
Splashes of colour complement the neutral décor throughout the house, with the exception being the bold and eye-catching living room with its bright, colourful furnishings and panelled feature wall. Finished to a high standard, there are a number of modern facilities including wireless internet access, a Smart TV with Netflix subscription, a Bluetooth speaker and a well-equipped kitchen and utility room. There are attractive gardens at the front and rear of the property and off-street parking for four cars is available on the gravel driveway.
Tucked away in the picturesque village of Daglingworth, The Secret Cottage is surrounded by the breathtaking countryside of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located within the Duntisbourne Valley, with the River Dunt meandering through parts of the village itself, this wonderful spot has many walks and cycle routes on its doorstep to explore, and the Greenhill Equitation Centre offers horse riding lessons for all abilities, allowing riders to enjoy the scenery on horseback.
Just three miles away is the popular Roman market town of Cirencester which boasts popular boutiques, cafes, pubs, restaurants and impressive architecture. The nearby villages of Poulton and Barnsley both benefit from highly acclaimed gastropubs, The Falcon Inn and The Village Pub, and Barnsley itself is home to Barnsley House which has a range of spa facilities. This area of the Cotswolds has many tourist attractions to interest all ages, including the Elemental Sculpture Park which incorporates artwork with nature and the Cotswold Water Park which offers a selection of water sports. Daglingworth is well placed for exploring many of the idyllic towns and villages of the Cotswolds such as Tetbury, Nailsworth, Burford and Painswick, as well as the further afield destinations of Bath, Cheltenham and Oxford.
Booking and payment
Character Cottages is a marketing agency and we do not own any of the cottages listed on our website. We manage a proportion of cottages within our portfolio and the remaining properties are managed by a third party property manager or the property owner – your pre-arrival email will contain confirmation and contact details for your property manager. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.
For bookings commencing more than 10 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 10 weeks prior to arrival.
All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.
A security deposit of £500 is payable, which is returned after the letting period, subject to an inspection of the property. For the avoidance of doubt, guests are requested to leave the property in a reasonable condition, consistent with the property's appearance upon arrival. In the event that the owners, or their appointed housekeepers, have to spend additional time tidying up after your departure, then the cost of this extra time may be deducted from your security deposit. The security deposit is payable prior to arrival at the property, via a bank transfer or a valid debit or credit card.
The maximum occupancy of the property, including its grounds, is 8 adults + 2 children under 12 at any point during your stay (please note that any infants in cots are included in this occupancy figure). Unauthorised over occupancy is a breach of our terms and conditions and may result in the cancellation of your booking and additional charges. Please consult us prior to booking if you wish to discuss the possibility of having more than ten guests at the property.
Regrettably, pets are not accepted.
Bed linen and towels
Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.
Arrival and departure times
Arrival time is after 4pm and departure time is by 11am. Access is via a key safe, therefore it does not matter if you are arriving late at night.

Bedroom 3 ensuite (first floor): Walk-in rain shower with separate handheld shower attachment, toilet and wash basin
Shower room (third floor): Walk-in rain shower, toilet and wash basin
Heating, fuel and logs
The property has an oil fired central heating system.
Electricity and oil are included in the rental price. An initial basket of logs is provided for the wood burning stove, from October to April, and further log supplies can be purchased from the owners.
The property has free wireless internet access, a Smart TV with Netflix subscription, a Bluetooth speaker and a DAB radio.
There is no telephone at the property.
Mobile phone reception is generally OK.
There is off-street parking for up to four cars on the gravel driveway and free on-street parking is available in the village.
Where a letting exceeds nine nights, a mid-stay clean, bed linen and towel change may be included in the price. Please check with us to confirm. Additional housekeeping services may be available on request.
Child friendly facilities
Guests are welcome to bring their own travel cots and high chairs, for any infants.
Young children should be supervised inside and outside at all times due to the multiple floors and tiered garden.
A small quantity of initial consumables is provided for your convenience (eg. tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, washing powder, toilet rolls, etc), however, you should not expect the quantity of these provisions to be sufficient for the duration of your stay.
Accessibility, health and safety
This is an old, Grade II listed property with many character features including sloping ceilings, low beams, multiple floors, steps between rooms and a tiered garden, all of which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility, or carrying babies, both in terms of their general movement and their ability to quickly exit the house in the event of an emergency.
The smoke and CO detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.
No smoking or vaping is permitted throughout the property.
As this is a period property, the toilets use a saniflo system and therefore it is imperative that only toilet paper be disposed of in the toilet. Any blockages caused will result in an expensive repair which will be deducted from the security deposit.
CCTV cameras are installed on the outside of the property, for security purposes.
Hen, Stag and other same sex groups
Unfortunately, Hen, Stag and other same sex groups are not allowed at The Secret Cottage.
If you would like to enquire as part of a same sex group, please contact us, as these may be accepted at the sole discretion of the property owner. Please note that same sex family groups are welcome.
In order to provide you with as much detail of our properties as possible, we sometimes use wide angle photography, which can make certain rooms, or spaces, appear larger than they actually are. Wherever possible, we try to include a floorplan, with detailed dimensions of rooms and areas.
