Pocket Guide: Porto Antico Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art Hotels

Visit the Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art

Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art offers art lovers an impressive collection of Japanese and Chinese art in a beautiful gallery, set within the romantic 19th-century gardens of Villetta Di Negro, in the centre of Genoa.

Italian artist and engraver and Genoan native Edoardo Chiossone is the mastermind behind the collection, which he gathered in Japan during the Meiji period. During his 23-year stay in Japan – from 1875 to 1898 – Chiossone worked for the Japanese government, engraving bank notes and stamps. He was also a passionate collector of Japanese art.

In his will, Chiossone bequeathed his Oriental treasures to the Liguarian Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa, so that they could be put on public display. After Chiossone died, his collection was sent to Genoa and was first exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts.

After World War II, the Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art was built to show off Chiossone's striking collection. Designed by leading Genoese architect Mario Labo, the museum opened in 1971.
