Bring your young children to this hands-on museum to let them develop important life skills while having fun playing.

Augusta’s Children’s Discovery Museum is a delightful place to bring kids for educational entertainment. Let your children from age 6 months to 8 years play while they build social, cognitive, problem-solving and peer interaction skills. Exhibits are modelled after common real-world situations.

In the Pizza Kitchen, kids take orders, prepare food and serve creative meals. The Grocery Store helps kids learn about foods, colours and shapes and practice counting. In the Bank exhibit kids handle money, identify coins and practice math skills. A working ATM, touch-screen computers and a “drive-through” tube simulate banking they see Mom and Dad doing. Reinforce these valuable life skills with your children when you return home.

The Ocean Touch Tank shifts focus to the natural world, with hands-on exposure to Maine marine life. Watch kids hold a starfish and hunt for a hiding lobster. Kids climb in the Tree House and learn about animals and their habitats in the Nature Centre. Building Our Future helps kids develop mechanical skills and begin learning about engineering with trains, slides, Lego cars and giant interlocking gears.

Creative play expands in many directions in the Theatre. Puppetry and dress-up costumes are props for the kids’ own imaginations to create and perform a play. Purchase a ticket and watch your child develop star qualities. Drums, piano and a dance space in the Music area provide additional creative outlets while they develop language skills, self-esteem and math skills. Creation Corner has a variety of art supplies and offers process-focused art training on Thursdays. When children need a break, the Lynn Duby Zen Den provides a spot to relax.

The museum is open during the day from Tuesday to Sunday year-round. Reserve the party room for special birthday celebrations. Pay daily entrance fees for adults and children or select from several annual family memberships if you will be making multiple visits during the year.

Augusta’s Children’s Discovery Museum is about a 5-minute drive from Capitol Park and the Kennebec River. Spend several hours at the museum and stroll along the Kennebec River Rail Trail for a great day with the kids.
